On the whole, this year's nominees are a much more respectable field than usual. If I had final say, I'd probably only keep Munich in the race, but the Best Picture slate is still pretty solid, with the possible exception of Crash.

I'm surprised, but pleased, by the nominations for Keira Knightley and especially Rachel Weisz. And for the first time, the three animated nominees actually were the three best animated features of the year.

Seems a shame that none of Herzog's documentaries were named. I suspect that Judi Dench got nominated mostly for, well, for being Judi Dench. And while Terence Howard might have deserved his nomination, "It's Hard Out Here For a Pimp" is a ridiculous song in a ridiculous movie.

I haven't seen Munich, but out of the Best Picture nominees, I'd only keep Capote. I'd say this year was much more predictable than others, although, as Eric put it more respectable, too.

Even though I think it's a worthy film, I'm hoping that Brokeback loses (aside from Michelle Williams and the original score), just because it's been so over-hyped.

I personally feel that A History of Violence should've been one of the best picture nominations. It hardly got any nominations, and the ones it did were in the smaller categories. It was my personal favorite of 05.

That's not to say that Capote, Crash, and Good Night and Good Luck were bad or anything - they were some of the best of last year. I might be able to see Munich and/or Brokeback Mountain this weekend since both are coming to WB.

The only film from that list I've actually seen is Howl's Moving Castle. This happens every year; the Oscars becomes a kind of game where I see if I can guess who'll win without having seen the films. Amazingly enough, I actually get it right quite a bit. Funny eh?

I agree that these are a respectable bunch of nominees, but also pretty boring. There's not much that I'm really passionate about, but that goes along with my feelings of the year as a whole.

That said, go Amy Adams! She was fantastic in Junebug -- one of my favorite performances of the year.

I suppose it didn't make a difference due to a lack in surprise winners, but perhaps my lack of enthusiasm this year was due to not seeing many of the nominees...

Hopefully, Transamerica and Mrs. Henderson Presents can stay in for two more weeks and I'll be 17 in time to see them.
