It's that time of year.

11. Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary
12. Sleater-Kinney - The Woods
13. New Pornographers - Twin Cinema
14. Oasis - Don't Believe the Truth

The only new albums I heard this year are System of a Down's double CD album, which is okay, but I wouldn't buy it, and Lamb of God's newest, ditto. I got my wife the new Depeche Mode for Christmas, but we've only given it a once through and nothing's grabbed me as of yet. (Yes, we had Christmas early -- ain't being a grown-up cool?)

The most appropriately named band ever. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

Hey, Eric, have you heard The Mendoza Line's Full of Light and Full of Fire? I'm listening to it right now, and I'm convinced that it's one of 2005's best (probably top 10 material), yet it's sorely overlooked. Given your taste, I think you'd like it. The glowing PopMatters review gives a good idea of what it's like. I can't believe more people aren't talking about this band and this record.
I like/love many of your picks, Eric. I'll list my 2005 favorites soon. _________________ Michael Scrutchin

Wow, Mendoza Line does sound like something I need to check out ASAP.
I probably should have waited to draw up my list... since posting that, I've purchased quite a few albums that probably deserved consideration: Ryan Adams' 29; Clap Your Hands Say Yeah; M Ward's Transistor Radio; Deerhoof's The Runners Four; Andrew Bird's The Mysterious Production of Eggs; Marah's If You Didn't Laugh You'd Cry; Neil Young's Prairie Wind, and Robbie Fulks' Georgia Hard. I haven't listened to them enough to know where I'd place them--if at all--but surely a few would make the list. Plus, there's a bunch more that I'm hoping to catch up with over the next few weeks/months, as the budget allows.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to your list, and thanks for the heads-up on Mendoza Line! _________________ "When I was in Barcelona they showed pornography on regular television. I'm assuming it's the same way in Mexico since they also speak Spanish." - IMDb user comment |

I'd have to add the Foo Fighters to the list. I think they did a phenomenal job with the album. I still can't stop listening to Green Days too. |

I could just wing it. We'll just spend the semester watching Iranian movies and listening to Wilco. Occasionally I'll have to say something "profound" about mise-en-scene or juxtaposition, just to sound like I'm doing my job. _________________ "When I was in Barcelona they showed pornography on regular television. That's humanities? Sounds a tad more interesting than the corresponding classes on this side of the pond. |

Last week we analyzed Stan Brakhage's Moth Light, and talked about what Plato, Horace, Pater, Ruskin, Mill, Carlyle, Morris, and Wilde had to say about the purpose of art. This week we're going to talk about the landscape sculptor Andy Goldsworthy, debate whether graffiti is art--can something be both illegal and art simultaneously?--and consider whether krump dancing is valuable art. On Friday we're going to talk about how there's more to art than just story or plot; I plan to show several paintings out of focus, show several movie clips with the sound and/or subtitles turned off, and play several songs in a foreign language so that we're forced to deal exclusively with the works' non-narrative qualities. It's a fun class.
Eventually we'll study the techniques and styles of various painting movements, then we'll do the same for cinema and talk about the overlaps. That's where juxtaposition comes in. _________________ "When I was in Barcelona they showed pornography on regular television.
