The Best of 2005
It's nearing the end of the year, and I've been looking over my Film Log, so I thought it was about time for a round-up of this year's standout films. The most obvious way would be to list the best of this year's releases, but since I've only seen three films released this year (Dark Water, Land of the Dead and House of Wax), then I'm going to have to compile a list of the best films I've seen this year (previously unseen movies, of course). Here goes, in order of viewing:

She-Creature (dir. Sebastian Gutierrez, 2001)
Darkness (dir. Jaume Balaguero, 2002)
Land of the Dead (dir. George A Romero, 2005)
Downfall (dir. Oliver Hirschbiegel, 2004)
The Dancer Upstairs (dir. John Malkovich, 2002)
Not a nad mix there I think. Despite some slow periods, it's been a pretty good year for movies. |

I actually prefer this version to Murnau's.

This is a surprisingly good movie. It was part of a package of remakes (well, movies with the same name anyway) for HBO (or Showtime, I forget) of Roger Corman flicks. The rest sucked. This one was actually clever and intriguing.

I agree. I think part of its bad reputation might stem from the fact that most people saw the butchered U.S. theatrical version, which was missing something like 15 minutes of footage. The film's effectiveness is largely dependent on its atmosphere, and I can only imagine how that version might destroy the pacing and mood. I saw the original version (on DVD in the U.S. as the "unrated version") and was pleasantly surprised by it, especially given the lousy word of mouth.

I remember hating Darkness, but I really don't recall enough about it to even remotely begin to discuss it.

The theatrical release wasn't really significantly different from the uncut version. The only moments excised were scenes of dialogue between Regina and her mother, and Regina and her boyfriend regarding her little brother and her father's condition. These moments certainly clear family matters up, and firmly place Regina as the central character, but don?t really alter the movie or make it ?make more sense? (as some complained it didn?t do). Indeed, I think its dependence on atmosphere--in my opinion, one of its greatest virtues--is what caused most casual viewers to dismiss it.

Yes, it is.

Agreed. The rest were barely worth seeing but this one had a great cast and some decent ideas behind it.

Once again, I'm in agreement. I wouldn't say it was perfect, but I did have a lot of fun with it. |

The other day I wasn't reading carefully and for some reason thought you guys were raving about Darkness Falls--and I couldn't figure out what kind of crack you were all on.
Anyway, I picked up a used copy of the unrated Darkness today, mostly because of the unanimous approval in here. I was mildly interested upon release, so thanks for the reminder!
