Decent list Mark, despite my distaste for The New World. I love that you included Stay because, despite the fact that it won't even crack my honorable mentions, it's certainly one of the most overrated gems of the year. _________________ Danny Baldwin

I really don't know how everyone missed it. _________________ "Film lovers are sick people."

Having spoken to a few other people about this, I'm beginning to think that Kairo is not as distant and dispassionate as some commentators would have you believe; there's definitely a lot more emotion there than I thought at first. If you're one of these people who feels that there's a fundamental loneliness at the heart of modern civilisation, Kairo becomes considerably more effective, both as a horror movie and a drama. |
I finally caught up with Kairo--just finished 10 minutes ago--and I read it the same way you did. To me, the movie is convincing, both as horror and as metaphor, primarily because Kurosawa stays so clearly focused on his themes of isolation and loneliness. My only complaint is that the drama, dialogue, and acting of some of the early scenes are not at all convincing. (I'd also point out Kurosawa's disinterest in characterization, but I'm not sure that particular narrative convention really applies here, especially if we read it as an expression of the movie's idea that other people are unknowable.) Those are relatively minor quibbles, though, and I'd certainly rank Kairo way, way ahead of Ringu or Ju-On.
Jim (or NW, if you're still listening), what should be my next Kiyoshi Kurosawa viewing? _________________ "When I was in Barcelona they showed pornography on regular television. I'm assuming it's the same way in Mexico since they also speak Spanish." - IMDb user comment |

I'm glad you enjoyed Kairo. Watched it again myself recently, and it's a fine film.
As for further ventures into Kurosawa territory, definitely next up (forgive me if you've seen it already!) is Cure. A little less accessible than Kairo, with even less of an ending, but widely considered to be his masterpiece.
If you have already seen Cure, take the plunge with Charisma. It makes even fewer concessions to genre and entertainment than Kairo and Cure, but it's a pretty solid example of Kurosawa's more 'difficult' (hehe) tendencies.
Seance is also worth seeing, especially if you've seen the British version with Richard Attenborough. It's perhaps the most straightforward of his later films, but it's still thought-provoking and very creepy in places too.
Artsmagic have just released The Guard from the Underground, one of Kurosawa's early films. It's a fairly standard slasher movie, but it's quite interesting to see how he handles 'straight' horror. |

Thanks, Jim. I've already seen Cure, but I'll look into the others! _________________ "When I was in Barcelona they showed pornography on regular television. I'm assuming it's the same way in Mexico since they also speak Spanish." - IMDb user comment |

Sheesh! This thread reminds me that at least three of us, myself included, didn't even have the time or care to make up lists. I would, now, but it seems so, well, yesterday. _________________ Danny Baldwin

Well, I guess that would make my ten-best in any year. _________________ "When I was in Barcelona they showed pornography on regular television. I'm assuming it's the same way in Mexico since they also speak Spanish." - IMDb user comment |
