Scorcese/Schrader - I've listed this as a pairing in my favorite filmmakers lists, so I'll do it here as well.
Inescapable paths of violence, the dehumanizing and isolationist nature of the city (a place absolutely CRAWLING with people), insomnia... these are a few of my favorite themes.
Taxi Driver was the first screenplay I wrote a critical analysis of. I had not, at that time, seen the film. The first page was just a description of Travis Bickle.
I probably wouldn't be writing if not for that screenplay. _________________ Rattlesnake's Texas Cobra, you sonofabitch! |

I'm torn between the two Davids: Lynch and Cronenberg. Both filmmakers incarnate the metaphysical aspects of the human condition in their work, questioning the status quo, no matter how comfortable, and embracing change, no matter how catastrophic or tragic. Metamorphosis is the offering of the outside world, and it is preferable to the stagnation imposed by the world of human belief. I myself am not quite as daring as the xenonaut protagonists of their movies, but I'm inspired their symbolic journeys. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

I was trying to pick just one name, but then I remembered that we discussed this once before. Out of sheer laziness, I will post a link to that thread:

I don't know that all my choices would be the same, but it's close enough. I'd probably bump Moodysson up, and definitely add the Dardenne brothers.

The three greates living (we also included some who died in the 90's when boiling it down, but they've been eliminated) directors are obviously:
-Francis Ford Coppola
-Steven Spielberg
-Martin Scorsese |
While I can't really fault myself for the three choices, was I that naive two years ago?
And, whoa, it doesn't feel like it's been two years since we've discussed all of this. And that thread was after we lost all the threads. _________________ Danny Baldwin

Oh, and Mr. Grammar, please don't inspect that quote. I already know what's wrong with it. _________________ Danny Baldwin

Yeah... there aren't too many of us left from before the Crash of 2003. You guys are like old pals, but I suppose I should feel all swoony--after all, I had a song and a website made for me!
(Not that either needs to be resurrected, mind you.) _________________ "When I was in Barcelona they showed pornography on regular television. I'm assuming it's the same way in Mexico since they also speak Spanish." - IMDb user comment |

Okay, just to recap my earlier list:
John Carpenter
Larry Cohen
Hideo Nakata
Alejandro Amenabar
Terence Fisher
Dario Argento
Don Coscarelli
I'm going to have to add Kiyoshi Kurosawa in there too, mainly for Pulse and Guard from the Underground, but also for Cure. He has a slew of horror movies in the next eighteen months, so I'm going to be an excited bunny for a while. |
