I've only really listened to a few 2003 releases. I'm way behind.
I do like the new Deftones album -- not quite great, but I'm digging the obvious My Bloody Valentine influence on some of the songs. And I'm a sucker for quality pop-punk, so I really dig Alkaline Trio's Good Mourning (catchy as hell, with the Trio's trademark smart, pitch-black humor). I really need to pick up the Cold and Radiohead CDs.
Other albums I've heard good things about and need to check out: Yo La Tengo's Summer Sun, Super Furry Animals' Phantom Power, Fountains of Wayne's Welcome Interstate Managers, and The Eels' Shootenanny! Oh, and I've heard a few songs from Nothingface's Skeletons, which sounds like a worthy follow-up to 2000's Violence. I don't listen to much metal these days, but I love Nothingface.
And, yeah, really looking forward to the Perfect Circle album. _________________ Michael Scrutchin

I haven't listened to one recent album ... music is really, really bad these days--even worse than mainstream cinema. _________________ Danny Baldwin

Most of what gets played on the radio sucks, yeah, but there's a lot of good stuff if you do a little digging. _________________ Michael Scrutchin

Yeah, I haven't been able to listen to the radio since, probably, 2000 and enjoyed it. _________________ Danny Baldwin

Considering that's the only album I've purchased or listened to all year... It's great, though; then again, it's Radiohead. _________________ "Film lovers are sick people."

Radiohead and The White Stripes both put out very exciting and creative albums; I'm also a sucker for Jack Johnson's laid-back, chill-out grooves on "On and On." |

I wouldn't know if they are among the best of the year--like Michael, I've been grossly negligent--but my two personal favorites so far are Fountains of Wayne's Welcome Interstate Managers and the Eels' Shootenanny!. (Cold, you're familiar with my admiration of the Eels. They're five-for-five, in my opinion.)
I like Radiohead's Hail to the Thief, but after several listens I still haven't felt the impulse to keep on listening. Same thing with White Stripes' Elephant. I like both albums, but I'm skeptical whether I'll still be interested a year or two from now.
I suspect that I will enjoy Dashboard Confessional's new album, but I haven't listened to it yet.
I agree with Michael, though, that there's plenty of great music being produced today--as long as you're willing to dig for it. Radio does indeed suck, but there are plenty of critics and publications that can help you sift through the mountain of non-mainstream music, and guide you to material that will mean something to you.

...Just picked up that new Liz Phair album (which is the only one I bought this year)...I like the non-poppy songs on it, but hey, it's better than all the stuff I hear on the radio, when I do listen to it. I like Radiohead, so maybe ill listen to their new one next. _________________ Danny Baldwin

I know I posted earlier that the White Stripes' Elephant didn't strike me as particularly memorable, but it's been growing on me. In particular, "Ball and Biscuit" seems quite wonderful.

I haven't been into any new bands since probably Coldplay, but I'm starting to hear stuff that's catching my attention now; The White Stripes in particular, and the songs I've heard from Mudvayne's new album are not bad at all. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

Now we just got to get you listening to Hail to the Thief again too. It's in my car, and every time the album ends, I just let it play over.
I wish I was more up to snuff on current music. I just got into Hedwig and the Angry Inch--which, in case you live under a rock like I do, is absolutely f***ing (can I say f*** here?) brilliant music--this past May, so you can see how far behind I am. _________________ "Film lovers are sick people."

Has anyone else heard Cursive's The Ugly Organ? Right now I think it's the front-runner for best album of the year for me, but it's still too early to tell. Read the AllMusic.com review; it's pretty spot-on with my feelings about it. I liked Domestica quite a bit, but The Ugly Organ is a masterpiece. _________________ Michael Scrutchin
