Still a lot I haven't heard, but here it goes:
- The Ugly Organ, Cursive
- Electric Version, The New Pornographers
- Two Conversations, The Appleseed Cast
- World Without Tears, Lucinda Williams
- Welcome Interstate Managers, Fountains of Wayne
Those are my favorites; not necessarily in that order, but close.
I also dig the self-titled Deftones album and The New Romance by Pretty Girls Make Graves, but they're far too uneven to make the top five. I also like what I've heard from (haven't heard the entire albums): The Meadowlands by The Wrens, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below by OutKast, Hail to the Thief by Radiohead, Yours, Mine & Ours by Pernice Brothers, You Forgot It In People by Broken Social Scene, Hearts of Oak by Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Phantom Power by Super Furry Animals, and Streetcore by Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros. I've only heard a few tracks from the OutKast CD, but I haven't liked any hip-hop this much since the mid-'90s. It'll probably be my first hip-hop CD purchase in almost a decade.
I wish I liked A Perfect Circle's Thirteenth Step. I bought it upon release, listened to it once, and have had no desire to listen to again. I'll give it another try. After all, many of my favorite albums are ones that I didn't like at first.
I've been getting a lot of recommendations lately by browsing the reviews at metacritic.com. They recently set up a best music of 2003 page that includes the best-reviewed albums of the year, along with the top 10 lists from various websites and publications. Worth checking out if you're seeking some good music you might have overlooked. I still have a lot of catching up to do. _________________ Michael Scrutchin

Ah, in the last month I've finally broken into the music of 2003! My wife received the Audioslave album, and I think it is muy bitchin'. I especially play "I Am the Highway" a lot. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."
