I really don't like modern rock bands. They all pretty much sound the same. |

Only if you limit yourself to what's on the radio and MTV. _________________ Michael Scrutchin

Hey Brett,
Did you ever catch up with Welcome Interstate Managers, by Fountains of Wayne? |

It's been on my to-get list for quite some time. How is it? |

I like a few of the songs, but it's not too hot, in my opinion. _________________ Danny Baldwin

All these months later, it's still one of my favorite albums of the year--it's so good, my loathing of the pure country track barely registers as a drawback. As much as I enjoy "Stacy's Mom," I wish they'd release a new single already... My choice? "Bright Future In Sales."

Yeah, that'd be a great choice for the next single. And I'd say the country track, "Hung Up On You," is one of my five favorite songs on the album. Unfortunately, I'm not as thrilled with the album as I was when I first picked it up. It's a good album, but it might be too lightweight and fluffy. There's nothing about it that resonates with me the way my favorite music does. It's fun to listen to, certainly, but I don't find myself returning to it very often anymore. _________________ Michael Scrutchin

Although I do listen to the band frequently, I must agree that they are, indeed, rather lightweight--their ability to compose a skillful, witty pop song is unparalleled, but that still can't compete with the music that resonates with me on a deeper level.

Must we?
Suffice it to say that I consider Mr. Mathers very talented, but that I wish he would apply his talents in a more constructive form. There's really no excuse for his rampant juvenilia, sexism, and violent fantasies. I still say the right man won, though, when "Lose Yourself" earned an Oscar last spring. That and "Stan" are rather amazing, aren't they?

No luck. "Mexican Wine" it is. Not a bad choice, I guess.

They're gonna release "Bright Future in Sales" as a single. They have to. They will. _________________ Michael Scrutchin

With January looming, I suppose it would be prudent to revisit a question asked earlier: What are our favorite albums of the year? Since I don?t follow music nearly as tenaciously as I do cinema, I can?t claim any comprehensive knowledge of the year in music, but listed below are some favorites that I suspect would certainly warrant consideration for a real Top Ten:
Favorites of 2003
Sort-of ranked, followed by my favorite track on the album:
Coldplay, Rush of Blood to the Head, ?Clocks? (Okay, technically this was last year. Sue me. ?Clocks? is still the song of the year.)
New Pornographers, Electric Version, ?The Laws Have Changed?
Eels, Shootenanny!, ?Love of the Loveless?
Fountains of Wayne, Welcome Interstate Managers, ?Bright Future in Sales?
Guster, Keep It Together, ?Careful?
Dixie Chicks, Home, ?Travelin? Soldier?
Zwan, Mary Star of the Sea, "Honestly"
White Stripes, Elephant, ?Ball and Biscuit?
Thrills, So Much for the City, ?One Horse Town?
Strokes, Room On Fire, ?The Way It Is?
Radiohead, Hail to the Thief, ?We Suck Young Blood?
Other Notable Tracks
Starsailor, ?Silence Is Easy?
Johnny Cash, ?Hurt?
Rufus Wainwright, ?I Don?t Know What It Is?
Electric Six, ?Danger (High Voltage)?
Kelis, ?Milkshake?
REM, ?Bad Day?
Jewel, ?America? (criminally underrated)
Weakerthans, ?Reconstruction Site?
The Only Song in 2003 to Make Me Visibly Bristle Every Single Darn Time I Hear It
Justin Timberlake, ?Rock Your Body?
I?m sure I?m forgetting some really great stuff that I deeply enjoyed this year, but off the top of my head, this ought to suffice. What are your recommendations?
