Actually Scarface is on the brink of being dropped from the 500. And i can see why Japon wouldn't be for all (or most) tastes. Some uncomfortable scenes but i reckon he's a promising director and credit to him for not being afraid of being labelled "arthouse". |

I don't think so. Seeing more movies would only serve two purposes, both negatives.
1) Reducing the PERCENTAGE of movies I've seen that I like.

Better to be a doer than a spectator in life, so credit to you there. But by being selective i'm sure you could keep up a decent quality percentage + still get to see quite a few more films, Monkeypox. |

I knew Taxi Driver wouldn't go unnoticed. I've been steeling myself, stiffening the sinews, for the backlash. Of course it's one of the great films for influence + cinematic flair, De Niro is superb, Jodie Foster is incredibly precocious, but no- keep this very hush hush- i'm a namby pamby softie liberal and (i know it's supposed to be ambiguous), much as i admire a lot about it i simply don't like the ending at all, and certain other things just make it hard for me to take to it. This is a list of favourites.
So Clockwork Orange style forced watching, eh? I shall orgasmically ooh and aah in the right places, ooh are you talkin to me, ooh that Herrman score, ooh that smooth gliding through the streets at night, ooh that idiotic taking her to a porn flick- yeah they're all great, but no i shall resist, i shall not be indoctrinated + brainwashed. Down with fascist vigilante-ism and down with Paul Schrader, i shall defiantly cry. Viva la Revolucion! Hasta la victoria siempre, Comandante! I laugh in the face of fear, i throw icicles down its vest (or some such phrase). No, a more effective way to make me say i like it would be to play a few notes of Agadoo or The Birdie Song. That will reduce my resistance to jelly, i shall immediately be turned to a grovelling cowering wimp. God bless guns, God bless the wondrous cathartic power of taking the law into your own hands, God bless the freeing of the innocents from the forces of darkness, God bless the eternal gratitude of their families, God bless the wholesome family, God bless those who would clean our streets of filth and restore the land to virtue and moral rectitude, God bless Dubya and all who sail in her, i shall proclaim with a glorious light in my heart. And great shall be the joy in heaven over the one sinner that repenteth. And verily the mulitudes will be amazed and thank God for the miracle of the blind man who now could see.
Er, On the Waterfront also left out. It's much less impressive than Taxi Driver anyway, but i despise Elia Kazan's attempt to excuse his own betrayal of friends through a hypocritical lesson in moral responsibility. |

I think the point you're missing is that Taxi Driver doesn't condone Travis Bickle's actions, or society's (apparent) positive reaction to them; rather, it finds them distressing and pitiable.
