In the RottenTomatoes.com forums, they're voting for the "Readers Fresh Pick Awards," which includes a "Favorite Film Critic" category. In that thread, a user named Kubrick's Double posted this write-in vote:
"Open vote: the critics at Flipside Movies Emporium (especially Eric Beltmann)."
As far as I know, this person was not paid to do that.

That seems rather absurd, since my actual contributions are pretty sparse. (I fear my days of writing on a weekly basis are long gone... I haven't done that since 1996.) Nevertheless, the unexpected bump for Flipside is certainly appreciated! My open vote would be for Rob Vaux, who I read more faithfully than most of those on the RT list.

Interesting that no one mentioned 100-pointer Mike D'Angelo. _________________ Danny Baldwin

Congratulations to Flipside (especially Eric)!
I think Flipside is easily one of the best movie review sites on the Web, and all the contributors are responsible for its success. Like Eric, I look forward to Rob Vaux's reviews, especially if he dislikes the movie; he's one of the funniest critics out there. Can't forget Jim Harper for keeping me abreast on Asian horror and fantasy, and the presently oh-so-rare Michael Scrutchin, Jeremiah Kipp, Sean O'Connell, and Mike Bracken reviews, which inspired my regular patronage way back before Flipside even had a forum. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

Well, as a filmmaker, this is one of the few critic-type sites I care for. Rob Vaux is, IMO, one of the best online, and Beltmann's contributions in this forum are better than 80% of online criticism.
Of course, being a bastion of online film criticism is, like Crash Davis' minor league home run record, a "dubious honor." The accessibility of the internet has allowed every addle-brained idiot their own forum to spread their ill-conceived opinions, and somehow, the mere fact that it's written lends it permanence and validity.
It's the same phenomena that happened in film with the digital revolution. I know. I'm one of the addle-brained idiots loaded with enough self-absorption to make ill-conceived films and expect people to watch them, and, admittedly, most of my online film criticism is also poorly established, with no standard set of criteria other than gut impulses and a brain rotted by too much soda and MTV.
My father's made no films, nor does he feel a need to go online and spout how much he loves Robert Duval's performance in Open Range or dissect each episode of "Walker, Texas Ranger." Still, his opinions are just as useful as mine. Mine just have an artificial credibility. _________________ Rattlesnake's Texas Cobra, you sonofabitch! |

I don't think there's such a thing as a "standard set of criteria" when it comes to responding to something as subjective as art. I can't imagine relying on a "rubric" to assess art--as if personal expression can somehow be smooshed into a one-size-fits-all mathematical formula. If I start walking into movies with fixed preconceptions about what they should do, well, then I've lost sight of the best reason to go to the cinema in the first place.
