Who do you think is going to get nominated? I think Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Motorcycle Diaries are going to do well. What are your predictions?

Okay, so you're shilling for Focus Features, officially? I was wondering with that Girl Next Door comment, at first, but now we know for a fact. How about you respond and fight back and say that you're not a shill?

Focus is owned by Universal. Pesty_romona has also pimped several Universal titles recently (Land of the Dead, Van Helsing, Dawn of the Dead). Of course, she also pimped a couple of Wolfe titles awhile back, as well as a couple of Warner titles and a Fox title. But, yeah, it looks like she's doing Universal/Focus now. Should I delete her threads from here on out, or do you guys think they might be worthwhile discussion-starters?

But Pesty's our favorite transparent shill!

Although poking fun at her blatant commercials is one of my favorite pastimes, her posts are so rare that they aren't truly irritating. And sometimes decent--sometimes even real--discussions have followed. Unless you fear setting a bad precedent, I'd be worried only if her volume increases.

What I'd really like to know is how I can become a full-time shill. That's good work if you can find it.

What Eric said. Delete the ones that don't result and any real discussion. Otherwise, what's the harm? After all, a shill isn't going to make me go out and buy Van Helsing.

Yeah, seriously, pesty, where can I sign-up for part-time work? I wouldn't mind supplimenting my income.

Yeah, pesty's not so bad, I agree.

From what I've heard, most of these message-board shills are usually unpaid/low-paid interns -- sometimes for the studios, sometimes for the advertising agencies working for the studios. And some of these shills are simply members of online shill squads trying to win free junk.

So what's the deal, pesty? Who are you shilling for and what's the compensation?

So I'm the only one?

That's what I assumed when I actually stopped to think about it. Never knew that before now, though.

You know, I think we all could be much more convincing shills.

Don't you think actually starting a real discussion would make more people go out and buy? Maybe we'd get promotions to...the e-mail room. (Yes, that was lame, but I just had to.)

Really disapointing. A lot of my faves didn't even get nods. Anyhow, my picks, if I was a member of the academy:

BEST PICTURE

RAY, I thought that Million Dollar Baby was more well-rounded than Ray and Sideways, but they are both higher on my favorites list. Ray, mostly for Foxx's preformance and the music. If we're going by my top 10 of 2004, Ray is the highest out of the films nominated. Still pissed Baadasssss! and Kill Bill: Vol. 2 didn't get any oscar nods. Oh well.

ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

Jamie Foxx - RAY

ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

Morgan Freeman - MILLION DOLLAR BABY

ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE

Hilary Swank - MILLION DOLLAR BABY

ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

Sophie Okonedo - HOTEL RWANDA

ANIMATED FEATURE FILM

THE INCREDIBLES, but it is still way overrated.

ART DIRECTION

A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT, Why wasn't The Life Aquatic nominated, though?

CINEMATOGRAPHY

A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT

COSTUME DESIGN

THE AVIATOR, but perhaps I will end up giving it to Troy.

DIRECTING

THE AVIATOR, Just based on the fact Scorsese deserves an oscar for all the times he got screwed. I actually thought Million Dollar Baby was directed better.

DOCUMENTARY FEATURE

SUPER SIZE ME, Which is also really overrated. Where the hell is Fahrenheit 9/11?

DOCUMENTARY SHORT SUBJECT

No clue.

FILM EDITING

COLLATERAL

FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

Haven't seen any of these, but how the F*CK did Bad Education and The Motorcycle Diaries NOT get nominated? This is a damn crime.

MAKEUP

No clue.

MUSIC (SCORE)

No clue. And where is Jon Brion?

MUSIC (SONG)

"Al Otro Lado Del R?o" - THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES

SHORT FILM (ANIMATED)

No clue.

SHORT FILM (LIVE ACTION)

No clue.

SOUND EDITING

SPIDER-MAN 2

SOUND MIXING

RAY

VISUAL EFFECTS

SPIDER-MAN 2

WRITING (ADAPTED SCREENPLAY)

SIDEWAYS

WRITING (ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY)

ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND

I wouldn't know where to begin to assess these categories. I don't think I know nearly enough about the profession to be able to discern their achievements just by watching the story once, whether in the theater or on DVD.

Fahrenheit 9/11 wasn't eligible in the Documentary category. I think its chances in other categories largely hinged upon whether it had tangible social impact; W's re-election probably marginalized the film in the Academy's eyes. It's just as well in my book; even though I'm sympathetic towards Moore's agenda, I really think that film is shoddy work. A second viewing only intensified my skepticisms.
