Muchas Gracias. Now I shall go read up on it a bit more before I start running my mouth again. . . _________________ Check out my own (considerably cheaper) review site at http://www.xanga.com/home.aspx?user=TheRingbearer11 |

I love Kevin Costner's Robin Hood. I just can't get enough of it. |

Perhaps. Still, while some people might not elevate those three as equals to the great masterworks--I'm not sure I would place them there--I doubt many would lower them into the ranks of "guilty pleasures." There is room for the skillful genre picture that deserves praise, free of guilt. _________________ "When I was in Barcelona they showed pornography on regular television. Agreed. You know, I get the feeling I watch more crap cinema than anyone else here, except possibly for Michael. In fact, the reason I first started visiting Flipside regularly was for his reviews of movies like Addicted to Murder, Desecration, Scrapbook, and Drainaic. Not that all of those are crap, but you know what I mean. I think good entertainment is the fiber of one's cinematic diet, no less important than nutritious, vitamin-fortified films like Lawrence of Arabia or Battleship Potemkin. I tell you, my cineaste bowels are clean and strong. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

I agree.
It's funny, I give Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein and Live and Let Die the same rating I give Sunrise and Night of the Hunter - five stars. Are they on par technically? No, A&C meet Frankenstein and Live and Let Die are technically inept compared to Sunrise and Night of the Hunter, but i'll be dammned if they aren't the most exciting and fun movies ever. This is when I think I should just give up ratings entirely. _________________ "Pino, fuck you, fuck your fuckin' pizza, and fuck Frank Sinatra." |

This may be true. It's really quite arbitrary. A movie could speak volumes to one person and another may not empathize with it at all. That's the excuse a lot of my friends use for not reading critics. |

A lot of my friends use the same excuse: well, everyone has different opinions, so why should I read about some yokel's personal choice? I think the fact that one person's treasure is another's failure makes film criticism all the more important. Reading a positive review of a movie I hate (or vice versa) and being entertained and wowed by convincing arguments from a great writer is one of the pleasures of reading about movies. |

Bingo.

Yeah, I have trouble with ratings too. But I've always said that a rating without a commentary is next to useless. We had a discussion like this on another thread a while ago, and I used Schindler's List and Re-Animator as examples. Awarding both movies the highest rating on a scale is ridiculous; seriously, how do you compare one to the other? Only the explanation that the former is, say, a profound look at morality in the face of evil, and the latter is a great splatter comedy, makes awarding a perfect rating for both anything but nonsensical. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

I think this is the thread you're referring to:

Good discussion, that was.
I agree entirely with NW on this point. There simply is no consistent--nor useful--method to weigh works of art against one another. _________________ "When I was in Barcelona they showed pornography on regular television. Right; at least, works that are completely disparate in terms of intention, theme, and, possibly, genre. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

Yeah well I still think Commando is The Greatest Film Of All Time TM.
I expect to see it in Sight and Sound's next "best films" poll...
Ah well, at least it's the one whose testosterone-pumpin' and adrenaline-inducin' levels are the highest in cinema history. |
