So in the mood to learn about something, or watch something about a person's experience. I don't, I just don't feel like watching a blockbuster by any means. Any suggestions? |

Off of the top of my head.
Hoop Dreams would be an excellent choice, if you haven't seen it. The same goes for 1995's Crumb. My Architect: A Son's Journey hits DVD shelves, later this year. Touching The Void is part-documentary and is now avaliable on DVD. Last year's Capturing the Friedmans is a devastating look at a family's breakdown after the father and son are accused of making and viewing child pornography. Winged Migration, also nominated for an Oscar, is a poetic and flowing look at flocks of birds' journies, across the globe. As long as you avoid Michael Moore's so called "documentaries", you're pretty much in for a real treat.
Beware of last year's Spellbound, which I was of the few to dislike.
There have been some great surfing and skating documentaries, as of late, too. Stacy Peralta's Riding Giants and Dogtown and Z-Boys are excellent looks at the two sports, through both archival footage and recent interviews. I also admired Dana Brown's Step Into Liquid, from 2003, even if it wasn't as ambitious as the other two.
Speaking of docs, everyone should check out What the Bleep Do We Know!?, which I saw back in July, and is now recieving a wider and wider release. For all you Wisconsinites, it hits the Downer and the Oriental in mid September. It is about quantum physics, but is actually quite fascinating. Part animation, part documentary, and part acting, it deserves a full recommendation, despite many critics' hesitation. _________________ Danny Baldwin

I watched Paradise Lost 2: Revelations yesterday, and highly recommend it, although it probably falls into the "too serious" category. Maybe save it for another more intense day. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

Scratch is one of my favorite documentaries. _________________ "I don't like talking to people I know, but strangers I have no problem with." -- Larry David, "Curb Your Enthusiasm" |
