The horror flick I'm most anticipating right now is The Machinist, starring a really sucked-up Christian Bale (who lost over sixty pounds for the role; now that's dedication) playing an paranoid insomniac who's convinced they are out to get him. It sort of reminds me of Jacob's Ladder mixed with Driller Killer. Bale impressed the hell out of me in American Psycho, playing the strangely pathetic/scary sociopath Patrick Bateman, so I'm sure he'll raise goosebumps in this one. Director Brad Anderson's (lots of Andersons in the director's chair these days) last picture Session 9 didn't quite blow me away as much as some, but I liked it, and thought it was atmospheric and deeply creepy. Check out trailers for The Machinist here, although young'uns without R-Cards should get permission from their parents before watching the long trailer since it contains cussin' and nipplage. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

I wasn't a huge fan of Session 9, but The Machinist looks awesome.
It's good to see Christian Bale is taking control of his health. I thought he had to lose some weight. _________________ "I don't like talking to people I know, but strangers I have no problem with." -- Larry David, "Curb Your Enthusiasm" |

This looks interesting, even though I wasn't a fan of SESSION 9, either. I am gonna try to catch this at Toronto. _________________ "A film is - or should be - more like music than like fiction. This is at the San Diego Film Festival, so if it doesn't conflict with the others, I'll catch it. _________________ Danny Baldwin

If anyone wants me to see anything there, here's the list:

I think I'll hit about 10 movies and 2 panels in 4 days. Hopefully, I'll be able to get out of school early on the second day (which is a Friday). _________________ Danny Baldwin

Nice. I heard very good things about PRIMER, which I am looking forward to. _________________ "A film is - or should be - more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what's behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later." -Stanley Kubrick |

I've been waiting for Primer for what seems like ages, and The Machinist is near the top of my list as well.

I am gonna check out THE MACHINIST at Toronto, but I think I'll wait for PRIMER to open over here. _________________ "A film is - or should be - more like music than like fiction. Yeah, that's on my list of ten. If there are no schedule conflictions:
Around the Bend
Dear Frankie
Finding Home
Her Majesty
Purgatory House
Rick
Swimming Upstream
The Box
The Machinist
The Ride
It looks like Angels with an Additude may be opening, and despite that odd choice, I will attend if that's the case. Beat the Drum, Born Into Brothers, and Sonny Boy all spark my interest, too. We'll see how it plays out. _________________ Danny Baldwin

Uh-oh. This one and Primer run at the same time; I hope they add an extra Sunday showing for one of them. _________________ Danny Baldwin

So did you ever get a chance to catch The Machinist, Danny? _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."
