The festival isn't 'till the 28th. I'm booked to see Primer instead but the Brad Anderson and most of cast (Not Bale, though) being there for interviews is making me question my decision to opt out on it. Whatever my dad wants to go to, I guess... _________________ Danny Baldwin

Ah, too bad. I hope it gets a wide release. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

Primer had a huge audience because Machinist filled up the largest auditorium (600 seats or so) in around five minutes. I wish I would've gone to it; Shane Carruth's movie was rather bad. And I had such high hopes. I've only fully liked one movie so far; I dunno if I'm going to even feel like going down tomorrow for the final day. Blegh. _________________ Danny Baldwin

Finally saw it. Although it wasn't playing anywhere around me, I have a friend of a friend who was able to obtain an, erm, unofficial video release. I'll make penance for my indiscretion when the movie hits video, since I like it enough to to buy it.
Naturally, it couldn?t live up to expectations, but it doesn?t fall too far from them. If you suspect the truth of Trevor Reznik?s (Christian Bale) suffering early on, as I did, the movie still throws in enough curve balls and quasi-red herrings to make you question yourself. It?s certainly worth watching more than once to see how and why Trevor has constructed his world in the way he has. (Don?t worry--that?s not the spoiler you might assume it is.)
Bale is absolutely ghoulish-looking here, but he?s able to make sympathetic a character who is obviously loosing grip. It?s Trevor?s need, which is clear only at the end, but palpable throughout the running time, that establishes the connection between character and audience.
Also, it?s worth mentioning Michael Ironside?s performance. With so little screen time he manages to develop a surprisingly well-rounded character.
A lot of reviewers have been comparing The Machinist with Hitchcock, either positively or negatively. While any suspense movie owes Hitch, I?m not sure where such a comparison exists here, beyond the superficial; indeed, I?m fairly certain Hitch would never have made The Machinist. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

It's on DVD. Definitely worth checking out. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

i absolutly loved the machinest! christian bale at his finest i think. the scene that really made me cringe was when he was getting up from bed walked ove to the counter and all his ribs and bones and such were showing like no tomorrow! that to me was incredible... never thought id even see him in a part that made him look so bad and uneasy... i havent seen many movies that stick in my head but this is for sure one of them... |

Actually, no, I don't know what you mean. I know shills sometimes post in "regular" threads in order to "prove" that they are real members instead of just shills, but shouldn't the regular comments be somehow relevant to the discussion at hand? Or at least make sense?
Lol, okay i get now. You're a computer. _________________ "When I was in Barcelona they showed pornography on regular television. I'm assuming it's the same way in Mexico since they also speak Spanish." - IMDb user comment |
