Has anyone else listened to Loretta Lynn's Van Lear Rose? I bought it back in April, and at this point I'd say it's my second favorite album of the year, right behind Wilco's A Ghost Is Born.

Tonight my wife and I saw Lynn in concert, at--shockingly--our local county fair. I was surprised she kept the date, since she just endured three weeks in the hospital for double pneumonia at the age of 69. Apparently this was only her second show since falling ill, and she spent most of the (brief) set sitting in a chair. Intact was the on-stage banter, and the entire set consisted of requests, which was rather nifty. She only agreed to one song from Van Lear Rose: "Portland, Oregon," which on the album is a duet with Jack White (of the White Stripes). Unfortunately, she completely botched the song, forgetting about half the lyrics. Afterwards she apologized and claimed that was the very first time she has attempted to sing that song in concert, saying that she hadn't sung it since recording it! Overall, it was a rather frail concert, but we had great fun anyway.

It's a great album! My fondness for Jack and the White Stripes are admittedly what led me to it (Jack White produced the album), not my fondness for Loretta Lynn (who I knew next to nothing of beforehand), but their work together is beautiful.

Next album I HAVE to buy is A Ghost is Born. I feel too left out of all these Wilco conversations.

I just listened to a ghost is born, my first Wilco experience, and I'm not sure it's my kind of thing. I suppose I respect it, technically, but the style, in general, seems a bit like an aquired taste.

I had to listen to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot many times before it started to pay dividends. My first reaction was apathy, but months later its stature had grown considerably. While I liked a ghost is born immediately, it too has become better over time. Don't give up on ghost after a few cursory listens; it's not for everybody, certainly--as with all music, personal taste plays a role--but its rewards definitely increase with deeper familiarity. Those critics who have called Wilco an "American Radiohead" have found an apt comparison, even though their sounds are quite different: Both bands require a little work on the part of the listener, but the returns are exponential.
