Hello everyone. I was googling definitions for "movie snob" for a discussion on my own general discussion forum and came across your little corner of the web. After reading through a few threads, I reckon y'all look like some smart folk.
By way of introduction...I am 27 years old, currently a glorified receptionist and bored brainless in Atlanta, GA. I have a BA in Theatre and am currently working on getting into graduate school to pursue a dual masters, MBA and an MFA in film production, concentration yet to be determined. I love film with a rabid passion but often don't pass the litmus test with my "snobbier" friends, who think anything with a budget over $100 million starring a big league A-lister has to be worthless tripe, and if everyone loves it, it must be terrible. I love movies. I go to the movies to laugh, to cry, to be swept away, to be entertained, to be enlightened and made to think. Some rare films are able to provide all of the above for me, but I'm just as happy to fork over my $8 for the movies that provide for 2 or 3 of them. ;)
I look forward to discoursing and dissecting the celluloid with you. |

Welcome Juleska!
I agree that contempt for the mainstream is a mirror image of contempt for the arthouse--I'm after the gifts of cinema, regardless of where they come from.

Thanks Eric! My real name is Cory, by the way.
Reading through the threads here, I get the impression that many of you are students. If so...where/what are you studying? |

Hi Cory,
Many of the forum members are indeed students, but I'm on the other side of the desk--I teach high school literature and humanities. I'm also a few years older than you. This June I pass the 3-0 mark.
As for colleges, I have attended three, all here in Wisconsin. Most recently I finished a graduate program at Cardinal Stritch University.
Of minimal relevance: My sister lived in Atlanta for several years while her husband studied at the paper science institute, and my wife and I visited them a few times. I am an Atlanta fan.

Welcome!
I am indeed a student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, majoring in film and comparative literature and minoring in film studies. When I graduate from here in three/four years, my plan is to attend graduate school at The University of Texas-Austin, the Vancouver Film School, or (God willing) NYU.
Your description of your love for movies is perfect. |
