For everyone in the Milwaukee area, today (Friday the 14th) and tomorrow, the UWM Student Film & Video Festival plays at 7:00pm. I attended this evening, and it was a fine collection of work; I was duly impressed. The three ranking winners were Anne Barber's Bloom (my favorite as well), Mariko Ujihisa's Louis & Me, and Drew Rosas' Mind Plasma. Styles range from narrative to animation to documentary to experimental and everything in between; if you have the time tomorrow night to go, it's a rather exciting experience, or for me, anyway (since I attend the film program here). It was my first time going, and it's really cool seeing some people in my film classes have their work shown on a big screen; definitely very inspiring, which is worthwhile since projects and exams are currently kicking my ass.

Bloom, Lilly Czarnecki's Polkadiddles, Chris Bierden's Scene Missing, and Mind Plasma are the most exciting: there is great talent, beauty, humor, and skill in all of those.

Matt, I assume you also saw, then, the ad for the Union itself. What did you think? I, for one, can't stomach that schizophrenic style--especially because it reminds me of cheesy water-park ads.

I'm glad you brought that up!!! I thought it was hilarious, in that it was indeed interminable. My friend jokingly said he was going to write that in as his #1 favorite film on the audience ballot; a cheesy water-park ad is the perfect analogy. My favorite moment: when the camera lingers on the Burger King sign, apparently indicating the awe-inspiring burger mania that may be held in the Union. (And isn't it a bit strange having an ad for the facility that the audience is currently in?)

LOL. I, for one, felt an instantaneous need for a Whopper.

Do you know how these films were selected? Were they all senior projects, or was this open to all levels of the film program? Who did the whittling? And, most importantly, when do I get to see some of your work on the Union screen??

(Did you ever see Heavy Duty, my little pet project?)

So, Beltmann, when will I see the sequel?

Personally, my favorite three films were "Trial By Error", because it was hilarious, "Louis & Me", because I know a girl who spent around $250 on a Louis Vuitton wallet on our second day of the Germany field trip, and the one about the janitor in the bathroom just because I found it oddly entertaining. I forget the name of it. They were all very well done.

It was a unique experience. I've never been to Union Theater. It was a fun night, even though I ended up on the other side of the Hoan Bridge in confusion as I attempted to navigate back to West Bend.

Although most of the films shown in the festival were indeed senior projects, it wasn't a requirement. Porcelain Dreams - the one with the janitor in the bathroom - was done by a freshman/sophomore collaborative filmmaking class, and a few of the other filmmakers aren't quite seniors yet. The screening panel was comprised mostly of TAs and professors in various programs here at UWM (film, film studies, English, art, etc.).

Ah, who knows? I'm simply waiting for the right time to unleash my awe-inspiring perfection upon the unwitting audience. Wink

And actually, I have not seen your now-highly celebrated Heavy Duty. It's at the top of my list!

I arrived home, powered on the computer, and saw it was already posted. I assume you had just finished? Good timing!

Great article, Eric - and my two favorites were also Bloom and Polkadiddles. I have to say I wasn't a huge fan of Pangaea, but I loved A Fossil from a Satellite.

I have to admit that I was impressed by Polkadiddles. I never would've thought a dress could be so inspiring, or that you could have several minutes of interesting film focusing on fabrics.

Of course, Polkadiddles isn't about fabric, it's about the abstract possibilities of the cinematic image.
