I'm talking about Once Upon a Time in the West. Because I'm lazy I will post some comments I made in another forum, but do feel free to discuss the film, which is one of the finest Westerns, ever!
Quote: | By the by, today I watched Once Upon a Time in the West with the commentary track [the first DVD commentary I've ever fully listened to!] It was terrific -- very, very insightful and interesting; it also made me appreciate the film even more. I think I've fallen in love with Leone now, seriously. His style is incredible; his usage of music, his juxtaposition of close-ups against landscapes, his curving from profile to the front of a face... Man! What a film, really. I loved it, and it's now one of my favourites -- it now has a place in my ever-developing Great Films List.
The funny -- and astounding -- thing about Leone's film is that Morricone wrote and composed the score way before the film had even been made. It is the [perfect] way it integrates with the vivid images which makes it all the more amazing. That crescendo during the famous tracking shot with Jill at the train station, as the camera moves up and shows us the whole town, is a masterstroke by Morricone; the music swells up at the very instant the camera ascends, seamlessly. It is one of the many scenes in Once Upon a Time in the West which makes my hair stand on end, because of it sheer beauty. Also, note the exaggerated natural sounds, which also form part of the soundtrack -- most notably at the memorable beginning scene, what with the windmill, the knuckle-cracking, the fly and whatnot. |

I agree. It's one of my favorites. I've seen it six times now, and I'm still frickin speechless after the ending. Every time. |

I saw this quite awhile ago, and I remember liking it quite a bit. I'll have to watch it again, but I think The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly will always be my favorite western. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

I'd vote for The Man From Laramie, or maybe Man of the West or The Naked Spur. Does Duel in the Sun count?
