The three films are a redubbed My Neighbor Totoro, Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind, and Porco Rosso. While Totoro is currently available in the US, this is still good news since the only version of Nausicaa is a long OOP, crappily dubbed and truncated VHS release (retitled Warriors of the Wind, which sports the one of the worst and most inaccurate pieces of box art I?ve ever seen), and Porco has never seen US release to my knowledge. I?m most anticipating Nausicaa, since the original seven-volume manga is, as far as I?m concerned, one of the best works of fantasy ever written. Follow this link for the source article.

A few years back I bought the Japanese 5-disc/11-movie Studio Ghibli collection, which provided uncut transfers, and original language with subtitles. All three of these were included, and all three are worthy of investigation. I wasn't nuts for Porco Rosso, but the other two are quite wonderful.

Totoro is one of my all-time favorites, if not the favorite, and I like both the original and the dubbed. I dunno if I could get used to a third version, though. This is good news, however, since my copies are all VHS. Do you know if it will be the same actors in the first dub doing the new dub of Totoro?

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like it, comparing IMDB (Mei: Cheryl Chase; Lisa Michelson: Satsuki) with the article: "The English-language version of this wonderful film includes the voice talents of Dakota Fanning (?The Cat In The Hat?) as Satsuki and Elle Fanning (?Daddy Day Care?) as Mei."

Yeah, I'm not overly thrilled with the idea of a redub either. For Totoro anyway. Nausicaa, on the other hand, sorely needs it.

I had no problems with any of the 6 (not 5) discs. All worked properly and looked great (except for a tiny, annoying studio logo up in the corner). It was worth every penny.
I've seen dubbed versions of Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, because I saw both in the theater. I much prefer the subtitled versions of both (Mononoke is included in the set, but Spirited Away was released later). Totoro I have seen only subtitled, and I plan to keep it that way. (Terrific film, incidentally.)

Monoke is unquestionably better subtitled, but I almost prefer Spirited Away dubbed. I think the American voices almost bring a subtlety to the imagination, allowing us to become more swept away by the picture, rather than only the characters. The Japanese actors know the characters more (the only voice I actually prefer in the dub is that of Haku), but I feel as though the American version brings them out more, with simple feelings rather than complexity. The Japanese take seems more accomplished, but the American one portrays what I think Myazaki wanted to create more--adventure.

Thanks for the info, Eric.
You know, I generally prefer subtitles myself, but I was thoroughly impressed with the dubbing on both Mononoke and Spirited Away. I could gladly live with either version. Incidently, I just missed seeing Mononoke in on the big screen. That would have been bliss.

As far as dubbing goes, I'd agree that the jobs on those two pictures weren't too shabby. I can't think of any scenario, though, where I'd actually prefer an Americanized version over original artwork, no matter how accomplished the alteration.
