I use this site to get the low down on movies, especially if I didn't really "get" a film. Several contributors to this site have such advanced understanding of the the art form it's stunning some times.

I go to filmthreat.com semi-regularly, but their reviews usually aren't as thoughtful as Flipside's. I use it as an investigative tool, mostly.

I buy Film Comment every issue. Amy Taubin is in my top 5 of film commentators.

I agree about Amy Taubin and Film Comment - a wonderful, outstanding critic. One of my favorites. I also like Ed Gonzalez from Slant Magazine and A.O. Scott from the New York Times.

Of course one must consult the critics. Does one not consult the Rabbis of old in the Torah for the Old Testament? Bultmann and his Tubingen cohorts to understand the New? H.L Mencken in literature or Dallas Willard for Philosophy? The legions of wonderful art scholars who can enlighten us in the various nuances of light and shade or the progressive history of anatomical drawing? Likewise it is a good rule of thumb to seek the advice of the old sages on the seventh art like Pauline Kael, Jonathen Rosenblum, Alan Stone, David Thompson, Roger Ebert, David Bradley, Patrick Goldstein, Patrick McCray et al. Also the "young bucks" like Chris Null and his rabble at filmcritic.com.

Is it absolutely necessary? No. But neither is going to the dentist until your teeth start falling out. So let us consult those doctors of the proverbial Hollywood grin lest our smile be revealed as a smile full of bad choices.
