Obviously a misprice, right?
History of Cinema (12-DVD Set of Silent Classics)
The set includes:
- Battleship Potemkin
- The Beloved Rogue
- The Birth of a Nation
- The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
- Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
- The General
- The Hunchback of Notre Dame
- Intolerance
- Metropolis
- Nosferatu
- Orphans of the Storm
- The Phantom of the Opera
The list price is $89.99. Amazon has it for sale at $5.94 (93% off list price) and it's been on their top 10 best-selling DVD list for the past couple of days; now it's at #1. Now, this set is from Alpha Video, who produce budget-priced DVDs of mostly public-domain films, so it's not gonna be anywhere near Kino or Criterion quality, but that's still an insane deal.
EDIT: I added the other titles to the above list. (Found 'em on another message board.) _________________ Michael Scrutchin

That seems almost too good to be true. I mean, those are great films, but maybe the DVDs in the set are of poor quality or obsolete. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

I'm sure these transfers are inferior. Nevertheless, factoring in S&H, that's 74 cents a flick. Definitely worth the gamble. Even if only 2-3 of the films are of reasonable quality, that's still a great deal. I think Michael is right--it's gotta be a misprice.

I already own 5 of the listed 8, and I've placed an order, too. Like I said, at that price it's worth the gamble. Why not?

Embarrassingly, I don't own a single silent film. This should up my collection. _________________ Danny Baldwin

I suppose we have an obligation to satisfy here. All together now: Thank you Michael!

Just did a quick check: Between VHS and DVD, and including short films, I own 344 silent films. In my defense, I do have a particular interest.
Danny, surely you've at least seen a few, right?

I've seen four on that list, and I think sixteen in total, but I'd have to check my logs. _________________ Danny Baldwin

The Barnes & Noble online store seems to have both the 8- and 12-disc sets. The 12-disc set is priced at $80.99 and includes the following titles:
There's two there I haven't yet seen--Beloved Rogue and Orphans of the Storm--so hopefully that's correct info.

Eric, you beat me to it. Yeah, those seem to be the correct titles.
It's funny. Alpha Video is releasing several of those titles as stand-alone DVDs on the same date, Feb. 24, and they're all priced at $6.99. There is no way the insane price on the box set is intentional. I doubt they'll honor the misprice, but I guess it was worth a shot, huh? When I ordered mine, the expected shipping date was late March, early April -- whaa? _________________ Michael Scrutchin

And the Amazon price is now listed as $76.49. Yow.
So, will they actually honor the insane misprice for all of us? _________________ Michael Scrutchin
