[The Third M?n]

Somewhat influenced by something they're doing over there on Rotten Tomatoes, I've decided to do this nifty little thing which will [hopefully] create lots of discussion and film rating gobbledygook. Basically, I will post a list of films with 25 titles within it every 5 days or so, and all you have to do is rate the ones that you have seen, and, err, talk about them if you wish. The list of movies that have hitherto been rated and their respective ratings by the posters will be posted on this post. The rating system will be this [exceedingly similar to that used on RT -- okay, so I won't get points for originality but it will work]:

PRO - Masterpiece, truly great film

pro - Very good or excellent film

hmm - Solid, but nothing special

con - disappointing, mildly okay film with a few good aspects

CON - very bad, visual diarrhoea

Feeling a bit reluctant, are we? Hmm...

I'm okay with this game, even if I didn't feel like discussing any of the movies. I will say I like Soderberg's Solaris better than Tarkovsky's, blasphemous as that may be to admit. And, umm, I'm ashamed that I haven't seen half the films I haven't seen, although Punch Drunk Love is not my fault, since, for some reason, all PDL DVDs are convinced my player is not Region 1. Haven't figured that one out yet.

Just yesterday I saw The Conversation and I really, really liked it. An underseen little gem, I thought, but how do you think it compares to the rest of Coppola's films? [it's obviously superior to Dracula and Jack, of course]. I'm not sure which one is better, this or Apocalypse Now -- bear in mind that I have not seen any of The Godfather films [I know, I know...]

One more question: why only a pro for Touch of Evil? Come on, it deserves more than that...

That first shot really was breathtaking.

I loved Touch of Evil (and, hey, you defined "pro" as "very good or excellent," so I didn't give it a bad grade), and that opening shot is absolutely splendid, but it's a self-conscious noir (usually considered by most scholars to be that last "true" noir), so it doesn't quite carry that grim, semi-nihilistic feel most noirs do. Plus, Charlton Heston makes a ridiculous Mexican, and that's coming from a guy who lives in southern California.
