And here it is:
Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time
We could argue all day about questionable inclusions, unforgiveable exclusions, and crazy rankings, but it's not too bad, coming from Rolling Stone and all. I own most of the top 20, with the exception of Born to Run and Thriller. Anyway, I'll post the top 50 here and you'll have to click the link above to see the rest. So, here are the top 50 albums of all time according to Rolling Stone:
1. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles
2. Pet Sounds, The Beach Boys
3. Revolver, The Beatles
4. Highway 61 Revisited, Bob Dylan
5. Rubber Soul, The Beatles
6. What's Going On, Marvin Gaye
7. Exile on Main Street, The Rolling Stones
8. London Calling, The Clash
9. Blonde on Blonde, Bob Dylan
10. The Beatles ("The White Album"), The Beatles
11. The Sun Sessions, Elvis Presley
12. Kind of Blue, Miles Davis
13. Velvet Underground and Nico, The Velvet Underground
14. Abbey Road, The Beatles
15. Are You Experienced?, The Jimi Hendrix Experience
16. Blood on the Tracks, Bob Dylan
17. Nevermind, Nirvana
18. Born to Run, Bruce Springsteen
19. Astral Weeks, Van Morrison
20. Thriller, Michael Jackson
21. The Great Twenty-Eight, Chuck Berry
22. Plastic Ono Band, John Lennon
23. Innervisions, Stevie Wonder
24. Live at the Apollo (1963), James Brown
25. Rumours, Fleetwood Mac
26. The Joshua Tree, U2
27. King of the Delta Blues Singers, Vol. 1, Robert Johnson
28. Who's Next, The Who
29. Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin
30. Blue, Joni Mitchell
31. Bringing It All Back Home, Bob Dylan
32. Let It Bleed, The Rolling Stones
33. Ramones, Ramones
34. Music From Big Pink, The Band
35. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, David Bowie
36. Tapestry, Carole King
37. Hotel California, The Eagles
38. The Anthology, 1947 - 1972, Muddy Waters
39. Please Please Me, The Beatles
40. Forever Changes, Love
41. Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols, The Sex Pistols
42. The Doors, The Doors
43. The Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd
44. Horses, Patti Smith
45. The Band, The Band
46. Legend, Bob Marley and the Wailers
47. A Love Supreme, John Coltrane
48. It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, Public Enemy
49. At Fillmore East, The Allman Brothers Band
50. Here's Little Richard, Little Richard
---------------------------------------------------
Any thoughts?
Should greatest hits and/or best-of collections be allowed on such lists? I don't think so, but Rolling Stone's list is sprinkled with them. _________________ Michael Scrutchin

Sex Pistols but no Smiths in the Top 50? Bollocks, indeed.
Glad to see Velvet Underground and Nico ranked so highly. I adore about a quarter of these, am indifferent to half, and actively loathe the other quarter. Interesting mix. No real surprises in the Top 10, except maybe Marvin Gaye. And the inclusion of John Coltrane seems out of place--is that work really in the same category as all the others? What does R.S. mean by "album"? What qualified for consideration and what didn't? (I haven't read the article yet...)
Is it just me or does this Top 50 look like a list compiled by a bunch of balding guys who could be my father?
And Thriller is really, truly good, despite, well, you know.

You're right about The Smiths, Eric. The Queen Is Dead doesn't appear until #216! Crazy.

All I found by way of description on how the list was compiled was at the Rhino Records website, where they've set up a store selling the "RS 500." Here's the description:
-----------------------------------
Everybody loves a good list. Well, welcome to the granddaddy of them all. The editors at Rolling Stone recently polled an array of musicians, critics, and influential industry figures to come up with these 500 Greatest Albums Ever Made. Nearly 300 such music experts responded, each with a list of 50 albums. Some of the faces below are the same, some of 'em are brand new. From Hank Williams and Coltrane to The White Stripes and Coldplay, these are the discs you just gotta own.
-----------------------------------
So it wasn't just Rolling Stone staff that voted, as I originally thought. I wish I had a better idea of which "musicians, critics, and influential industry figures" voted in the poll. Oh, well.

My comment may have been misleading. My father isn't actually bald.

Ironically, my favorite Beatles albums are listed oppositely from the way they have them. Where are the Who? _________________ Danny Baldwin

The Who are on the list several times. Somewhere.
My top five Beatles albums would probably look like this:
- Revolver
- The White Album
- Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
- Abbey Road
- Rubber Soul
The order changes, but those are my five favorite Beatles albums. _________________ Michael Scrutchin
