the darkest thing about that movie is that at the end, as third man puts it, "he is not choosing the right path". since he craves revenge like it was sex or food, he makes that conscious decision at the end to actually deceive himself into killing again. that's just twisted, and makes him nothing short of a cold-blooded killer. but then again, what would he do without this mission?
as the viewer, i felt as though i had been invited into this guy's head and, at the end, learned a really dark secret about him. it almost made me feel sorry for him because he is completely isolated and almost a mindless zombie. _________________ Who let the dogs out? |

I'm not even going to show you guys my review. I wrote it in the 7th grade, and it's almost disgusting.
While I found Memento to be well-executed, I found the pacing to be choppy. Nevertheless, albeit imperfect, it's still one hell of a ride. _________________ Danny Baldwin

Easily? I liked the movie, but it didn't even crack my Top Ten that year. I much preferred The Circle, Ghost World, The Day I Became a Woman, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, Amores Perros, In the Mood for Love, and many others. Except for Woman (which hasn't yet found video release), I've returned to all of those more times than Memento, which engrossed but quickly evaporated both times I've seen it.

Me too. My top 10 (keep in mind I didn't see many that year because the whole movie-buff thing didnt set in) was as follows:
1. A Beautiful Mind
2. Ghost World
3. In The Bedrrom
4. Monster?s Ball
5. No Man?s Land
6. Amelie
7. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer?s Stone
8. Shrek
9. Black Hawk Down
10. AI: Artificial Intelligence
Honorable Mention: Memento; Gosford Park; Legally Blonde ; Donnie Darko; Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring; Vanilla Sky _________________ Danny Baldwin

Here's what I wrote after it was nominated for an Oscar:
"Unable to create new memories, Guy Pearce employs an elaborate system of pictures and tattoos to continue tracking his wife's murderer. By telling this mannered story backwards, writer-director Christopher Nolan forces the viewer into a similar, exhilarating bewilderment -- like Pearce, we are denied knowledge beyond the present moment. But like his memories, the buzz quickly fades. Truly great films arouse contemplation about their ideas and our own lives. All Memento gets us thinking about is itself. "
I'm not sure I was totally fair. Yet I still think the movie fails to exist as more than a great gimmick, a compelling puzzle.

I've only seen Memento once, and that was probably over a year ago, but it recalled a quote that goes something like this: "Of all the liars in the world, memory is the greatest."
There's another one that goes (I think it was Bacon), "Man prefers to believe what he prefers to be true."
To me, Memento seems to point up the idea that our perception of the world is based solely on our memories, and on our willingness and unwillingness to remember particular aspects. (Minor SPOILER) In other words, we're constantly manipulating our own truth, or at least how we will understand the truth in the future; we will only allow ourselves to know what's comfortable, and to a certain extent, we are constructing our own ignorance. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

I prefer to believe Nolan is less ingenious than we give him credit for.

I completely agree with the first part. That was my complaint about Mulholland Drive. From my point of view, Memento gets us contemplating rather weighty ideas about memory and the futility of revenge and serves as a great portrait of a man turned machine. _________________ "Film lovers are sick people."

Memento is about memory and revenge in the same way that Fast and the Furious is about engines and brotherhood.
