I'd pick these ones, considering that Freddy Krueger, Michael Meyers and the rest of the lot have all been turned into a joke:
Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) - The Shining
Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) - Psycho
Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) - The Silence of the Lambs |

I'm still good with Freddy and Michael. Even Jason was pretty scary in Friday the 13th Part 2. Well, when I was 13. I'm not sure I'd consider Jack Torrance a "bogeyman," but I'm good with Norman.
I'd also list:
Candyman
Sadako
Lector
the Zuni fetish doll
Pennywise
I'm assuming this list doesn't include monsters, hence, no Alien, Bruce (Jaws), Thing or the like. I also don't necessarily consider Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, Imhotep or any of the Universal monsters bogeymen. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

Hmm... I wonder why you made that choice. I mean, Pennywise is not portrayed as a terrifying character in the film IT (which, in my opinion, is an appalling movie that totally rapes the book). Rather, the director opted to illustrate him as a comic character that doesn't manage to scare people at all (at least that's what I thought). We all float down here... |

Maybe I'm coming more off the book. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

Sloth, The Goonies. Gave me nightmares in 1985.

Exactly. And that's one of my childhood favorites, by the way. |
