I'm not sure my dad has a favorite movie. If I had to guess, I'd say something like Star Trek II or Planet of the Apes or 2001. He tends to watch a lot of sci-fi, but I don't think he goes out of his way to watch specific movies, you know, like setting some time aside specifically for the purpose of watching it. Watching movies, like watching TV, is a form of relaxation for him. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

What I do is I watch films with him (often classics - the last viewings were Vertigo and Memento) on the weekend and then discuss them. |

That's pretty cool. My parents currently live very far away, and I only get to talk to them once or twice a week. They do read my reviews, though, which come up when we're on the phone. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

Night Watchman, your scenario is rather similar to mine. Like yours, my father, who is an avid filmwatcher (as opposed to filmgoer), gravitates to the sci-fi genre, especially action-driven or effects-driven ones. Our tastes are quite different, but our conversations tend to be lively. It was certainly his passion for B-movie classics like Day of the Triffids, Them!, or The Day the Earth Stood Still that initially sparked my interest in movie history. I guess I arrived at my position today by way of creature features!

That's interesting. I first started to become intrigued by the wonders of cinema when I saw The Matrix in theaters, back in 1999 (I must've ten or so). Man, was I utterly enthralled by it. Then came The Lord of the Rings... and I was fully immersed in film-watching and such. |

1999? You're making some of us feel old! Night Watchman and I probably have similar fond favorites from our childhood--Raiders of the Lost Ark, I'm guessing, and probably Airplane!, Jaws, Star Wars, Back to the Future--but of course that probably makes our dads feel old.
Man, I started publishing film thoughts in my local paper in 1991! (I was still in high school then.)

Yes, most of the movies you mentioned my dad saw when they were released... also Alien in 1979. He was in Canada then, he saw it and he loved it. |

Ah, thank you, Eric. The Day the Earth Stood Still is probably my dad's favorite movie. He took me to a science fiction festival when I was around ten (where I saw George Takei live and in person -- my first celeb), specifically because the movie they were showing was The Day the Earth Stood Still. I think I would not be overstating if I said he genuinely loves that movie.
And, yes, I saw all those movies you listed in the theater when they were released. I saw Airplane as the second movie on a double-bill with Popeye (remember that one? No wait, you'd probably rather not). Jaws was the first horror movie I saw in the theater (by then I was well versed in 50s B-movies, myself). I never did get to see Alien in the theater, but I'll be making that up this Halloween. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

Weird thread.
My old man likes the old cheesy comedies like:
-Zorro - the gay blade
-Vacation
-Midnight run
-Coupe de ville
-My cousin vinny
but I guess his fave would be perfect storm,
he used to be a pro fisherman. _________________ walking on air, up from the wheelchair,

My dad watched "The Deer Hunter" and "The Exorcist" with me - two movies that aren't really for kids - when I was about twelve. Those aren't my favorites, but they are two movies that somewhat led me on my path to adoring movies. |
