I assume you saw the wide-release version (135 min.), not the original limited-release cut (~155 min.)? I'll be seeing it soon, but I'm just a little bit annoyed that the version now in theaters may not be Malick's preferred cut of the film, as I've heard rumors that a three- or four-hour long director's cut is slated for the DVD.

As I've heard, the 135 minute version is Malick's prefered cut. He apparently pulled a Kubrick, cutting the movie even after it's release. I'd love to see the 155 minute cut, but I have a bad feeling it's now lost.

SPOILERS:
You know, I went back and read his review again, and Ebert's most violent reaction (no pun...okay a little) toward the movie seems to be the moment when the heroine is defeated by the villain. Does his anger stem directly from the fact that the movie robs the viewer of the catharsis of the villain's defeat?

I watched this again myself a few months ago, and I'm always amazed by how tense it remains. It really hasn't lost a bit of its edge at all. I wonder why it never acheived the same popularity as something like The French Connection.

Well, I guess I piss you off then.
I was also disappointed by Match Point, which I also saw last week. I'm becoming desperate for Best 10 Candidates.

Only for your politics. 
I'm going to check out Match Point (and hopefully Downfall) this weekend, and then hopefully finalize my 10 Best List. Not a difficult year, but certainly a bit lacking.

I forgot to mention that I also gave The Constant Gardener a look last week and rather liked it. Very clever and well-performed, although it won't crack my list, either.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (Spielberg, 1982)
High Tension (Aja, 2005)
Hustle & Flow (Brewer, 2005)
Match Point (Allen, 2005)
When a Stranger Calls (West, 2006)
Review of When a Stranger Calls.
I love E.T. with every fiber of my being. Well, most of the fibers at least. Yeah, I was crying by the end.
High Tension was the best horror film I've seen in years, and then the twist has to go and ruin it. If it had stuck with the unstoppable killer cliche, this would have been fantastic, but nope.
Loved the music-making scenes in Hustle & Flow, but all of the "street life" scenes seemed pretty toned down. I mean, his life isn't bad, and it really seems like his plan is to keep the hustling on the sides even after he makes it. Weird.
Match Point is Allen in fine form. Nice social study, and the turns it takes near the end are completely unexpected.

All Souls Day: Dia de los Muertos (Jeremy Kasten, 2005) - My name is apparently synonymous with cheesy horror: A friend of mine went DVD shopping with his girlfriend. She suggested buying this one. My friend said it looked pretty cheesy. She replied, and I quote, ?That?s okay. If it really sucks we can give it to Tom.? O how I hope the next time they go shopping they are compelled to buy, yet dislike the work of Luis Bunuel.
The Big Heat (Fritz Lang, 1953) - This old-style tough guy noir is highly engaging and carries some surprises, yet given a good amount of perspective by Lang, who understands the consequences of revenge better than do the characters who seek it.
The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (Tommy Lee Jones, 2005) - This is a stunning first entry for a new director, and one of the best movies of the year. Certainly no vanity project, Jones is as gritty and flawed as his best characters. I like how he and writer Guillermo Arriga allow the drama to dictate the progression of the narrative, and how he and cinematographer Chris Menges turn out some wonderful compositions. Best of all, it is resolutely and refreshingly humanist in its understanding of the value of human life and human emotion. A great movie.

I have contracted the same disease, sadly. My family immediately suspect that I'm lying if I say I want to watch a comedy or a period drama. Totally unjustified, of course. |

I don't quite have it that bad. And, in all fairness to them, I do have a high tolerance for horror movies that fall, shall we say, outside the bounds of what is generally considered professional quality. None of my friends would ever understand the appeal of a movie like Basket Case, Death Bed: The Bed That Eats, or the Coffin Joe flicks, or be able to find something positive to say about Godmonster of Indian Flats. I suppose I can understand their confusion.

Transcendence is what we all keep searching for in all those darkened auditoriums. It only happens for me once every few years or so... the last time was, I think, Before Sunset. And every time I watch that one on DVD, I'm startled, moved, and changed all over again. Another one for me is The Truman Show--I can't watch that movie without shaking.
