One of my old college buddies--a very talented poet--ended up doing the same sort of job, first in Milwaukee then in Minneapolis. It always sounded like a fun job to me, but you have to be cut out for relating to little kids, which I'm not. (That's why my wife teaches elementary, and I stick to the high schoolers.)
I've never read this story... but it seems ready-made for Tim Burton.
