Heads up regarding some Lon Chaney flicks on Turner Classic Movies tonight. After The Phantom of the Opera and Lon Chaney: A Thousand Faces, they're showing both versions of the little-seen crime chiller The Unholy Three (starting at 2:15 a.m. Central). The silent 1925 original, directed by Tod Browning, follows the 1930 remake directed by Jack Conway. In both, Chaney plays a former sideshow ventriloquist who masquerades as a kindly old grandmother to front a vicious crime ring. Since neither is available on video or DVD, this is a rare opportunity. My VCR is set.

Darwin's Nightmare, Hubert Sauper's documentary on globalization that made countless Top 10's last year but hasn't yet been released on DVD, airs on Sundance tomorrow at 1:45EST. Should be interesting.

I don't doubt that. I have never had much of a strong affinity with A.O. Scott, who seemed to be its greatest cheerleader.

Oh my. I need to stock up on VHS tapes for recording (or better yet, get a DVD recorder).

So what shorts are you gonna watch on TCM?
I'm gonna be recording Don Siegel's Star in the Night, Chris Marker's La Jetee, the Hermes shorts, and all the shorts by Lynch, Scorsese, Kubrick, Campion, and Polanski. According to TCM's schedule, that's about six hours worth of stuff, most of which I haven't seen. I can always catch up with the Chaplin and Keaton shorts on DVD (a few I've already seen), and the other stuff doesn't interest me as much as what I plan to record. I'd like to check out most of it, but I don't have time to sit around all day swapping tapes in and out my VCR.

I set my standalone DVD recorder to record all day. Lots of it I've seen already, and the rest I'll probably wander through. (I'll probably end up transferring a good portion from the HD onto disc to keep, though.)
Right now, I'm probably most interested in the Hermes collection and the Scorsese titles. La Jetee is most likely the finest offering all day, since it is, after all, one of the greatest movies, of any length, ever made.

For all the Wisconsinites:
Don't forget that the Milwaukee International Film Festival has begun. Last night was the opening film--The Queen--and tonight the fest really starts rolling. It continues until Sunday, October 29.
Thank goodness I have a wife who understands why this stuff is important to me--although she does refer to herself as a "cinema widow" during festival week.

Oh how I wish I could attend. What's worse, I'll be gone for the Wisconsin Film Festival in Madison this spring!
Though I am hoping to take a documentary filmmaking class next semester, so it'll all balance out in the end.
