I'm planning to record all of these to DVD. Of that list, I've seen only Los Olvidados. (It might be my favorite Bunuel, actually.) The rest I've been meaning to track down for eons.

For all of you that haven't seen Hoop Dreams (I think most of us have, though), it's about time. I have the new Criterion Collection DVD of it on the way, but if you want to catch it on cable : it will be airing next Saturday, May 21st, in its three-hour entirety (assuming they didn't cut it and plug in commercials) at 4PM on ESPN. _________________ Danny Baldwin

Although I tend to think those that declare Hoop Dreams the greatest documentary ever made simply haven't seen enough documentaries, I'd still agree that Dreams is a masterpiece. If I remember right, I named it the best of 1994. I really should pick up the Criterion edition, too--even though that will be the third time I buy this movie.

Sorry for the short notice, but last year's Best Documentary prizewinner Born Into Brothels is airing tonight on Cinemax. If I remember right, one Cinemax channel is showing it at 6:00 CST, and another at 9:00 CST.
I wasn't among the film's admirers, but it obviously has many. _________________ "When I was in Barcelona they showed pornography on regular television. I'm assuming it's the same way in Mexico since they also speak Spanish." - IMDb user comment |

The DVD, while not released in stores yet, is also available on Netflix. I saw it this past week and, while I was more fond of it than Beltmann, also sit on the side of its opposition. _________________ Danny Baldwin

I noticed that, too. Is there a place listing the titles to which Netflix has exclusive rights?
I also noticed that the Netflix disc is fullscreen, and Cinemax tonight also showed it fullscreen. Although I saw the film in the theater, I can't recall what aspect ratio it was projected in; since it was shot on digital video, perhaps it always was 1.33:1? IMDB couldn't answer my question. Does anybody know for sure?

I haven't found any complete listings, but doing a Google search for "Netflix exclusives," I discovered that Netflix has Hal Hartley's The Girl from Monday and Lucas Belvaux's Trilogy (On the Run, An Amazing Couple, and After the Life), in addition to Lukas Moodysson's Lilya 4-Ever, which I think we all already know about. I also read that Netflix has inked a deal with Hart Sharp Video, who will now release the Netflix exclusive titles 60 to 90 days after they debut at Netflix. _________________ Michael Scrutchin

I wonder when the Belvaux Trilogy and Lilya will be available for rent.
The deals I've been getting at Blockbuster lately have been almost incredible enough to cancel Netflix after renting a few rare titles (the Rewards program basically has a 2-for-1 deal every Monday-Wednesday, and due to a court settlement about wrongly charging late-fees, they've been giving out loads of courpons), but news like this keeps me hanging on. _________________ Danny Baldwin

We just got Cinemax, HBO, and a bunch of other premium channels (as part of a freebie deal). Do these stations ever show anything in widescreen? _________________ "When I was in Barcelona they showed pornography on regular television. The only things I've ever seen in widescreen on HBO were television series and original movies.
I have never had Cinemax. _________________ Danny Baldwin

My Pioneer DVD recorder--which spends an awful lot of time recording from TCM--stopped loading discs on Monday. With no warning, it simply began refusing to load blanks, discs it created, or prerecorded discs. Obviously something went wrong with the loading/reading mechanism, which means that I had to ship it back to the factory for repair. I'm saddened. That is all.
Fortunately, it's still under warranty.

Probably too late to matter, but in 10 minutes (11pm Central) Sundance is showing the Wilco documentary I Am Trying To Break Your Heart. The gorgeous black-and-white photography alone makes it worth seeing. _________________ "When I was in Barcelona they showed pornography on regular television. Dang-it! I missed it. = (
Eh, what the heck; I'm sure I'll end up ordering it.
You've seriously turned me into a Wilco freak, B-dawg. _________________ www.myspace.com/jordanmuehlbauer |
