If I get liquored-up enough I've been known to belt out some "Stray Cat Strut" or "Should I Stay or Should I Go." My most-requested is "Sex and Candy," believe it or not. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

9/29 ? 10/5
Clearwater (Koontz, 2003)
Nicholas Nickleby (McGrath, 2003)
Versus (Kitamura, 2000)
Better Luck Tomorrow (Lin, 2003)
School of Rock (Linklater, 2003)
Nowhere in Africa (Link, 2001)
Sweet Sixteen (Loach, 2002)
Day of the Dead (Romero, 1985)
Heaven (Tykwer, 2002)
Sick: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist (Dick, 1997)
Mad City (Costa-Gavras, 1997)
Of those, I?d highly recommend School of Rock and Sweet Sixteen. I loathed Versus?repetitive, utterly lacking in a unique style; virtually nothing happens but tedious physical injury?and Day of the Dead seemed to betray everything that made the first two entries worthwhile. I haven?t made up my mind about Sick, but I know I was simultaneously appalled and moved. Has anyone else seen it?

I wouldn't highly recommend it. I liked the movie.

I read your review. I hope I'm able to see it soon; sounds interesting.

I agree with you about Day of the Dead, sorta, although I don't think it necessarily betrays the other movies; rather, I think it simply restates what's already been said, but not as interestingly. It's a technically stronger movie that Night and Dawn, which probably explains why it has such a strong fan base. I like it, don't get me wrong, but usually halfway through I begin comparing it to Dawn.
I've hear of Sick and desperately want to see it. Is it on video?

I was expecting it to be much gorier too. That fact that it wasn't didn't disappoint me, but I was a little less-than-thrilled with it, although it does have more than a few darkly humorous moments. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

"It takes all kinds of critters
to make Vincent Farmers fritters"
I had been recommended this movie and heard a lot
of good things. I just didnt get into it.
That whole voice box thing was kinda creepy. _________________ walking on air, up from the wheelchair,

Been awhile since I posted in this thread. Here's what I've seen for the first time over the past two weeks:
- Day for Night (Truffaut, 1973)
- One, Two, Three (Wilder, 1961)
- Anything Else (Allen, 2003)
- Some Like It Hot (Wilder, 1959)
- Irma la Douce (Wilder, 1963)
- Lost in Translation (Coppola, 2003)
- Loves of a Blonde (Forman, 1965)
- Kiss Me, Stupid (Wilder, 1964)
- The Fortune Cookie (Wilder, 1966)
- Spider (Cronenberg, 2002)
- Mau Mau Sex Sex (Bonnitt, 2001)
- Raising Victor Vargas (Sollett, 2003)
- Better Luck Tomorrow (Lin, 2003)
- The Shape of Things (LaBute, 2003)
I adore Lost in Translation; I think it's my second favorite of the year so far, after All the Real Girls. I finished watching The Shape of Things a few minutes ago and, man, it packs a punch. I was surprised at how much the climax affected me, especially since I knew the ending going in (thank you, Netflix, for printing major spoilers on the DVD sleeve). Still digesting it, but I dug it, and it gets major cool points for the Elvis Costello soundtrack. _________________ Michael Scrutchin

That's cool, Michael - for me, "Lost in Translation" is also number two so far on my 2003 list, after "All the Real Girls" at number one. Hmm! ("Capturing the Friedmans" and "Winged Migration" follow at three and four...) I saw "The Rundown" yesterday; I think I'm in the minority in really not liking it. The Rock is very likable, but the movie is sort of annoying. |

I'm going to go out of my way to see Lost in Translation this weekend, come hell or high water. Or Dix. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

I'll share!
"The Mermaid" (dir. Georges Melies, 1904)
"Rio Bravo" (dir. Howard Hawks, 1959)
"Thirteen" (dir. Catherine Hardwicke, 2003)
"Wings of Desire" (dir. Wim Wenders, 1988)
"Sgt. Kabukiman, NYPD" (dir. Lloyd Kaufman & Michael Herz, 1991)
"Battle of Algiers" (dir. Gillo Pontecorvo, 1967)
"The School of Rock" (dir. Richard Linklater, 2003)
"Aguirre, the Wrath of God" (dir. Werner Herzog, 1973)
"The Rundown" (dir. Peter Berg, 2003)
"Anger Management" (dir. Peter Segal, 2003)
Well, "Anger Management" and "Sgt. Kabukiman" were really genuinely terrible (I like Adam Sandler a lot, but nothing could help "Anger Management"; Nicholson is worse than I've ever seen him). "Thirteen" was okay, a bit overrated I think. I enjoyed "School of Rock" and "The Battle of Algiers"; "Wings of Desire," "Rio Bravo," and "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" I all really loved. |

Wings of Desire is a great movie. The only other Wenders movie I've seen is Until the End of the World, which I liked a lot even though I found it overlong and unfocused. Where did you get ahold of the Milies movie? I've only seen snatches of some of them, and would love to watch them all the way through. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."
