I just learned that I have acquired 2 tickets to the March 4 Tweedy solo show in Chicago. I am trying my best to restrain my glee, but I may have to dance a little joyful jig.
My deepest thanks goes out to a generous Wilco fan who doesn't know me from Adam. Wilco fans are, as a rule, awesome.

I don't know if Ghost Is Born deserved the award, but I'm happy for the band. |
Ghost is my favorite among those nominated for Best Alt. Album -- the others being Bjork's Medulla, Franz Ferdinand's s/t, PJ Harvey's Uh Huh Her, and Modest Mouse's Good News for People Who Love Bad News. All good albums, but Ghost would've snagged my vote.

That's awesome. Glad you managed to score the tickets. _________________ Michael Scrutchin

Me too, but that wouldn't have been an impartial vote.
I like all of the nominees, but the only one that I like as much as ghost is Medulla. Me, I woulda nominated Arcade Fire's Funeral--that would have been some real competition. Has anyone else listened to it?
I was also very happy for Loretta Lynn. Definitely deserving.

Yeah, a friend of mine bought the Arcade Fire CD several days ago. It is fantastic, although I must say Medulla is still my second favorite album of 2004 (after Madvillainy). _________________ "I don't like talking to people I know, but strangers I have no problem with." -- Larry David, "Curb Your Enthusiasm" |

Wilco song I can't get out of my head: "We're Just Friends," from Summerteeth.
I woke up with it in my head, and what's strange is that I kept stumbling over it all day: At school, it came up 5 times on shuffle; at home, it came up 3 times; and tonight when I was checking a copy of a Wilco DVD, it came up again. Weird.

Yeah, this is awesome. They started with "Handshake Drugs" and ripped it apart.
Nels is "dapper" and "angular"? Jeff is totally crushin' on Nels... _________________ "When I was in Barcelona they showed pornography on regular television. I'm assuming it's the same way in Mexico since they also speak Spanish." - IMDb user comment |

By the way, they started pretty much right on time, at 10:00 est. We're only 35 minutes in. _________________ "When I was in Barcelona they showed pornography on regular television. I'm assuming it's the same way in Mexico since they also speak Spanish." - IMDb user comment |

While a ghost is born left much to be desired, for me, this is, indeed, really awesome. _________________ Danny Baldwin

This seems pretty accurate:
Jeff Tweedy Acoustic Solo Show, March 4, 2005
Vic Theatre, Chicago, IL
Main Set
Airline to Heaven
Sunken Treasure
Muzzle of Bees
Bob Dylan's 49th Beard
Please Tell My Brother
I Am Trying To Break Your Heart
Far, Far Away
Not for the Season
Someday Some Morning Sometime
Forget the Flowers
Remember the Mountain Bed
John Wesley Harding
Dash 7
Acuff Rose
Hesitating Beauty
Blasting Fonda
No more Poetry
I'm the Man Who Loves You
Encore 1
Cars Can't Escape
Chinese Apple
How to Fight Loneliness
Gun
Late Greats
Encore 2
Secret of the Sea
ELT
Summerteeth
Wishful Thinking
Box Full of Letters
Shouldn't Be Ashamed
Pecan Pie
If you break it down, it's a really terrific mix of Tweedy tunes:
5 from the Mermaid Avenue albums
3 from A.M.
3 from Being There
3 from Summerteeth
3 from A Ghost Is Born
2 from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
2 from the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot Demos
2 from the B-sides of singles
2 from Golden Smog albums
2 from Uncle Tupelo albums
1 from the Loose Fur album
1 from More Like The Moon EP
I nearly fell over when he played "Dash 7," which is from the very first Wilco album and has only been played live 3 times total! Same thing with "Blasting Fonda." Those two alone made the grueling day worthwhile. (I first worked, and then my wife and I drove through Chicago rush hour traffic, and then back to Wisconsin right after the show. I think we spent a total of 6 hours in the car yesterday.)
At the end of the second encore, Tweedy took requests from the crowd, which turned into a deafening cacophony. Hilariously, he rejected most of the requests, usually because he just couldn't remember them. (He shot down "Spiders" on the grounds that he can't imagine playing it any way other than with that heavy krautrock electric sound.)
Although the Vic has seats everywhere but the floor, we chose to huddle up near the stage, standing in the third row of fans.

So I've spent most of today bummed that my wife and I didn't stay in Chicago for the second Tweedy solo show, as we originally planned. Turns out, the Saturday show was even more glorious than Friday's. Not only did Jeff continue to play rare and obscure Tweedy tunes (including my holy grail "Radio King"), the opening act was Autumn Defense (which is made up of Wilco members Jeff Stirratt and Pat Sansone). No surprise, then, that Stirratt and Sansone wound up playing with Jeff during an encore later in the night. A larger surprise was when, after the second encore, the roadies wheeled out a drum set and keyboards and all of Wilco, minus Nels Cline, took the stage and morphed the Tweedy solo gig into an impromptu all-acoustic Wilco concert.
It certainly was Fan Appreciation Weekend in Wilcoworld.

Thought I'd put this in here, too.
If you've already purchased AGIB, the new A Ghost Is Born Bonus EP is a free download. Just put the CD in your PC and click on Enhanced Content. Wilcoworld has been swamped for the last couple of days, but tonight my download worked lickety-split. Less than 30 seconds for all 5 tracks.
I'm underwhelmed by "Panthers" (was expecting more after hearing a Tweedy solo version from last May). The studio version of "Kicking Television" is vastly different from the live versions I've grown accustomed to, but it's growing on me--it reminds me a bit of Radiohead. The other three tracks are live versions of "At Least That's What You Said," "Late Greats," and "Handshake Drugs," all recorded October 27, 2004 at the Orpheum in Madison, WI.

I would just like to announce that after two years of being part of the Flipside Movie Emporium, I have finally bought a Wilco CD (Wilco of course being the official band of Flipside Movie Emporium, being decided of course by me) and would just like to say that YankeeHotelFoxtrot has not left my CD player yet. Why did I not make this purchase sooner? |
