I saw it last night, and I agree with your take on it, especially on the point that Solondz shows that both extremes on the abortion issue start from a place of love and compassion. I don't agree with Solondz's detractors that he's a heartless misanthrope: he's bitter, certainly, but I think Palindromes, more than any of his previous films, has a poignant humanism that nobody who hates humanity could even begin to fake, even for the purposes of vicious satire.
I also recently saw Funny Ha Ha. It captures the awkwardness of post-college twentysomething life better than any movie I can think of. The character interactions and conversations have a rare fly-on-the-wall intimacy, and every awkward silence and embarrassing exchange rings with funny/painful authenticity. I can see how some might find it annoying or insufferable, especially if they don't identify with the characters, but I thought it was genuine and refreshing.

I agree. When Aviva is taken in the by the Christian household, Palindromes shifts into cartoonish parody; in fact, the tonal switch is a bit jarring at first. These scenes could certainly be described as vicious satire, except I think you're right that a humanism comes through even during this passage. Although Solondz finds their convictions a little ridiculous, he respects their sincerity and admires their compassion. Plus, it's thematically important to notice that despite their corny lifestyle these disabled kids--the same kind that Aviva's mother so readily dismissed as expendable--are viewed as innocent, vibrant and genuinely warmhearted.

Believe me, when I say that Pride & Prejudice might be one of the year's best, I'm more shocked than you.
Walk the Line is loaded with convictions but limited by conventions--why are so many musical biopics so cookie-cutter?--but like Ray, it's rescued by strong performances.
I liked Wheel of Time, but it strikes me as smaller in scope than Herzog's White Diamond and Grizzly Man, two recent films that resemble poetry more than documentary.

Aeon Flux (Kusama, 2005) - Most interesting part of my experience with the movie was my discussion with the friend I saw it with about the pronounciation of ?.
Brokeback Mountain (Lee, 2005) - Quiet and brooding with an intense finale that is still equally quiet and brooding.
Working on reviews of both.

Regarding the movie, I agree with Eric entirely.
But, now, for a more important question. Mark, did you get the screener from the OFCS? I wish I had applied back when they were accepting all of the applicants.

Well, in part through them. The Governing Comittee does a great job getting the studios to send them to us.

Nothing really bad recently, except for Suicide Manual, which is dull, derivative and poorly-made. I've watched lots of 'pulp' over the past few weeks: Deadly Bees was great fun, as was Captain Kronos. Not brilliant films, but solid entertaining if you're in the right mood. |

A Chinese Ghost Story is one of my favorite Hong Kong pictures. The sequel's not quite as satisfying, unfortunately.
I also like Wise's The Body Snatcher a lot more than I probably should. (Same with Seed of Chucky.  )

It's not. A Chinese Ghost Story 3 is better. Although it's not as good as the first one, it benefits from interesting characters and some truly funny episodes.

For some reason, I never connected with Seed. I'm a big fan of Child's Play and Bride of Chucky, but this one left me feeling unsatisfied. |

Last Days (Van Sant, USA 2005)
Syriana (Gaghan, USA 2005)
Two engrossing movies that are each close cousins to earlier work by each filmmaker. I think the impressionistic Last Days is more evocative and exciting than either Gerry or Elephant, while Syriana feels more ambitious but less impassioned than Traffic (which Gaghan scripted).
