I was in Madison this weekend visiting my friend who's in college there and saw both these films.

I had wanted to see Kingdom of Heaven for a long time and while I thought it was decent it still disappointed me. Not in the sense that I can point out to you where the movie faltered, but just that it lacked.

On the other hand I absolutely fell in love with The Boondock Saints. Great acting, dialog, and plot make it one of my favorite movies I have seen in a long time. The lead singer in my band has a tattoo of the 2 words you see on the lead characters hands going down his side. Anyway, great film.

Capote (Miller, USA 2005)

McLibel (Armstrong, UK 2005)

Darkness (Balaguero, USA 2005)

All of these had virtues, and the top three were all quite compelling. I'd like to especially mention Ray Wise's performance in Good Night, which I found very moving.

I'm continually amazed by how many people adore Boondock Saints. There must be something there, but I don't know what it is.

Capote (2005)

Compelling storytelling, as beltmann put it. I really liked this film. Great performances esp. from Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Cuar?n, 2004) - You know, I never reviewed this one. I'll work on that one along with Goblet tonight. Anyway, it's a solid entry, although the condensing of the novel is apparent, and the film feels a bit disjointed. The scenes between Harry and Lupin add a nice human element to the fantasy.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Newell, 2005) - This is the best of the series so far behind Chamber of Secrets. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Again, condensing the novels is necessary, but it does wear some on the material. Full review

The Producers (Brooks, 1968) - One of my absolute favorites. Still love it.

King Kong (Cooper and Schoedsack, 1933) - I loved this movie as a kid, and I loved watching it again. I forget how gruesome it was--Kong breaking the T. Rex's jaw, Kong stamping natives into the mud with his foot, Kong dropping the woman he thought was Fay Wray to her death. I highly recommend the new DVD. Great transfer and two really solid documentaries, one from TCM and the other from Weta Workshop.

Rent (Columbus, 2005) - This exemplifies what I dislike about stage-to-screen musicals. Full review

Only two films, early in the week:

Funny Ha Ha (Bujalski, USA 2003). This extremely low-budget twentysomething comedy starts with a series of conversations that rely exclusively on natural acting and dry settings; we keep waiting for these kids to kick in their clever-cool dialogue, but it never comes. Instead, Bujalski has set out to capture how people like this actually talk, actually relate, actually feel. What's interesting is how consistently he maintains verisimilitude and an unaffected rhythm of the quotidian. It's a small, very minor achievement, one that duplicates reality without ever really interpreting it.

Palindromes (Solondz, USA 2005). It opens with the funeral of Dawn Weiner, and then follows the story of Dawn?s cousin Aviva, a 13-year-old girl who wants only to be a mother. When she gets pregnant, her militantly progressive mother imposes an abortion, with tragic results. Later, Aviva runs away from home and finds herself among religious fanatics with ties to violent anti-abortion activities. This funny, heartbreaking, uncomfortable movie is simultaneously Solondz?s tamest yet perhaps most provocative patch of quicksand. Many critics recognized how Solondz depicts both extremes of the abortion issue as destructive, but few seemed to notice that he also shows how both extremes start from a place of love. The movie is loaded with countless other emotional complexities, too, so much so that Solondz?s central gimmick?over the film?s course Aviva is played by eight different performers?is just about the least interesting thing about it. I watched it twice.
