Good Night and Good Luck (2005)
This was a very interesting film. It was refreshing, dare I say, to see a film in black and white. I wouldn't be surprised if this film gets nominated come Oscar time.

I'm amazed that the Paradise theatre in West Bend is actually showing some good films. beltmann, have you seen Capote yet? What did you think of it? That's one of the films playing there.

True, my preference is to avoid that place. I think management loves popcorn and pretzels but hates movies. Unfortunately, my schedule is so overbooked right now that I can barely find time to go to the movies at all, let alone making extra drive time, so I've been grudgingly submitting to the Paradise more often in recent months.

This weekend I had been hoping to hit a double feature at the Landmarks for Capote and Good Night, but was worried about finding time to do so. Imagine my shock upon discovering that the Paradise actually booked both! I saw Capote there this afternoon, and will hopefully catch Good Night tomorrow. Equally astonishing is that Pride & Prejudice is scheduled for Wednesday.
Philip Seymour Hoffman's Truman Capote is an excellent performance in a good movie. I was glad my drive was only 3 minutes rather than 45, but my Paradise woes continue... near the start I had to tell an usher that the film was framed too low, and near the end the sound started to fade away, to the point that eventually the dialogue was barely audible over the whirr of the projector. This problem has happened to me before at this theatre; when it comes to proper presentation, the only reliable thing about the Paradise is its unreliability. Should we make a wager about what will go wrong with Good Night and Good Luck tomorrow? Will it be the framing, the sound, the focus, or all three?
To be fair, Jarhead seemed rightly projected last week.

There weren't any problems yesterday when I went to see Good Night and Good Luck. I was surprised that my friend and I were the only ones in the theatre! I hope I can see Capote sometime.

When the Paradise books movies like Capote or Constant Gardener, I usually make a point of going there just to help show that there is an audience for such fare here.
There weren't too many people at Capote this afternoon, but we were talking before the movie started, and everybody agreed that it was amazing West Bend booked the film, and agreed that it was nice not to have to travel to the Oriental. There are pockets of the filmgoing market in West Bend that are underserved. Thing is, I can hardly blame the Paradise for skipping something like Junebug when they will profit exponentially more with Wedding Crashers.

I was so riveted by Capote that I let them get away with it being slightly out of focus for the final thirty minutes for the sake of not missing any of the movie.
When I'm ushering at our theatre, I always check each one every half hour because, in truth, projectionists are the laziest of all of the people that work at theatres. They get to sit up there all day, unmanaged, when there's no need for help on the floor. Just the other day, in Derailed, we had the masking completely wrong. What's more: it wasn't fixed 'till I saw it in the 4:30 showing; not one person came out during the 1:00 to comment that 1/3 of the image was being projected onto curtains.

That's just it. Getting up means missing part of the movie, plus interrupting any kind of flow or momentum that the story has earned. Besides, it's not my job to monitor the projection--although I'm not so naive as to believe that there's any hope for multiplex projectionists to start paying attention to what's thrown at the wall.
I get worked up about this on principle. When I purchase my ticket, I feel that we are entering into a contract: I will give the theater my money, and in return the theater will give me a properly presented film. Isn't that the implied deal? And I'm tired of honoring my end of the contract while theaters routinely, flagrantly, and unashamedly break theirs.
I'd argue that when a DVD looks and sounds better than the average multiplex screening, that's a major reason why theater attendance is down--it's as responsible for the slide as high prices and rude audiences are. If true believers like myself--movies belong in their natural habitat--are starting to second-guess whether the trip is worth the time and money, then the industry is in trouble.

Hold on, there are actually projectionists in the projection booth at your theater? When I complain at my theater they have to go out and find the projectionist.

The only theaters I've ever been to that actually monitor the film have been the Landmarks--the Oriental and Downer--and I'm not sure even they have projectionists constantly on watch.
Every multiplex I've ever patronized has to track down a projectionist when there's a glitch--and they never seem to be in a hurry. Today it took at least 5-6 minutes before Capote's framing was fixed.

Not so much viewing this week. Of the new films, Taxi was the best; highly entertaining and well-constructed. Nothing new or terribly creative, but a damn sight more fun that the usual round of 'mismatched duo' action comedies, and that includes Rush Hour.
Hero was good, but it lost me at the end.
Amelie is one of the few romantic comedies I can stand, and it's excellent. La Reine Margot has been a favourite period drama for years now. Very complicated, but thoroughly engrossing, thanks to an all-round excellent cast. |

Whoa now...I didn't look at your actual list and assumed this was the Queen Latifah Taxi for a second there.

Some theatres now try to get away with making people both booth and usher and scheduling accordingly.
We have radios to communicate, so it's never really a problem. I only know of one other theatre that doesn't do the same.

I guess it was my expectations, really; I simply wasn't expecting the downbeat ending. Credit to Zhang Yimou for trying to step beyond the more traditional HK-style 'big climax' ending though- it's my problem if I'm not ready to make that move with him!
On the whole, it didn't grab me around the throat in the same way Musa the Warrior and House of the Flying Daggers did. |
