Where is this hostility coming from? Did you fall off the wagon? Jim, get over to Danny's place, quick!
I have indeed seen The Lizzie McGuire Movie. I saw it in 2003. As a serious student of cinema, I considered it my duty.

REALLY?. All this time I thought you hadn't.
Do you have any comments you wrote at the time in your logs? _________________ Danny Baldwin

Well, I can tell you that I saw it in between Nowhere in Africa and Sweet Sixteen. This is all I jotted down: "I never saw the TV series, but all the characters here seem transplanted to a more ambitious version of that show. Now promoted into high school, Lizzie travels to Rome on a class trip monitored by her new high school principal. Once there, she gets mistaken for an Italian singing sensation, setting into motion a complicated plot involving romance, sneaking around, betrayal, but mostly loyalty. Realizing I'm not in the least the target audience for this shallow stuff, I suppose I can admit that it's probably slightly better than most similar fare."
Not very insightful, I concede. Just bland plot description... which, come to think of it, perfectly captures its essence.

The same probably goes for the sequel. I think the influence, good and bad, they've had on movies has sort of diluted their impact, but their style and kineticism was absolutely unique for their time. |
This is an important point... similar to how we should try to transport ourselves back to the Twenties before trying on some Keaton. |

For the record, I sincerely agreed with your point here. Even though it's impossible to perfectly recreate the mindset of an earlier era, I still think we should do our best when watching older films. It's the only way to approach a work with something like fair play. The Evil Dead movies are good examples--it's unfair to judge them harshly based on what's happened in movies after their initial release. That would be like criticizing Gunga Din for not using CGI for its special effects.

I think I misconstrued your comment as a swipe because of the way it was phrased and thought, "Jeez, where the hell did that come from," and then, you know, went into AICN fight-or-flight mode.
I used to be pretty active on the JoBlo horror forums, and so many times I'd notice that the younger posters who were only familiar with Scream and IKWYDLS would bash Halloween or TCM, or what have you, simply because it didn't boast a sleek 90s style, have a high enough violence/gore quotent, or a cool soundtrack. I'm not comparing Danny's reaction to theirs necessarily (Danny, doesn't even particularly like horror that much anyway, as I recall), I was just making an observation inspired by it.

Although criticizing it for its inherent racism is another matter. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

No prob. Sometimes I am guilty of the sarcastic swipe, but rest assured, it's always meant in the most harmless, goodest of natures. Any "meanness" is always tongue-in-cheek, never sincere. Maybe I take it for granted that after all these years you guys will read it that way... but I know Danny understands my rude "fullscreen" comments always start from a loving place!

I now reserve the right to use "goodest" with impunity. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

I had to remember that you saw Nowhere in Africa on DVD to be able to keep myself from drooling at the thought that there was a theatre out there that played those three titles together. _________________ Danny Baldwin

WAIT! LIAR! Think before you post.

Clearwater (Koontz, 2003)
Nicholas Nickleby (McGrath, 2003)
Versus (Kitamura, 2000)
Better Luck Tomorrow (Lin, 2003)
School of Rock (Linklater, 2003)
Nowhere in Africa (Link, 2001)
Sweet Sixteen (Loach, 2002)
Day of the Dead (Romero, 1985)
Heaven (Tykwer, 2002)
Sick: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist (Dick, 1997)
Mad City (Costa-Gavras, 1997)
Of those, I?d highly recommend School of Rock and Sweet Sixteen. I loathed Versus?repetitive, utterly lacking in a unique style; virtually nothing happens but tedious physical injury?and Day of the Dead seemed to betray everything that made the first two entries worthwhile. I haven?t made up my mind about Sick, but I know I was simultaneously appalled and moved. Has anyone else seen it?

Nice try, Encyclopedia Brown. The posted screening log is often inaccurate. The database never is.
In fact, there are several flaws in that post. The first is that Clearwater was viewed the previous week; I remember sitting on it until my review was up. And besides Lizzie, there are two other movies missing: Maid in Manhatten should follow Versus, and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days should follow Day of the Dead. I can't recall why I skipped those three, but it was probably just an oversight... I usually type titles into the log fairly quickly. I'm sure there have been plenty of others throughout the entire Log.
The database also has brief reactions to all of those posted titles, not just that short paragraph at the end.

I was hoping you'd appreciate that, and find using it as liberating as I did. _________________ "When I was in Barcelona they showed pornography on regular television. I'm assuming it's the same way in Mexico since they also speak Spanish." - IMDb user comment |

I tried to find one, and couldn't. I did, however, find a forum in which users fought over the appropriateness of a butt-shaking banana emoticon. _________________ Danny Baldwin
