I didn't think it was quite so bad, although definitely a duffer. I would recommend that you stay away from Isola too, which I understand gets a US release soon as well. It's really f*cking terrible. |

I'll be the first to defend Van Helsing, which is extremely odd, given my distaste for the monster movie.

One of my grandmas uses the internet. My other one has been prohibited by my grandfather because he's into the whole "government is watching you all the time online" conspiracy.

By the way, nice list, Beltmann. While I didn't like Collateral or The Saddest Music in the World much and still remain fond of The Girl Next Door and The Ladykillers, I'm mostly in agreement with you, as three of your choices make my current list, as well. But, more importantly, great insights, as always.

Thanks Danny. Glad you enjoyed it. I'm guessing Before Sunset is one of those three? I actually re-watched Sunset on DVD a few weeks ago, and am more convinced than ever that it's a masterpiece.

Currently #4 on the list. I bought it with a big pile of previously viewed DVDs at Blockbuster a couple weeks ago, and have been waiting for the right time to watch it again, back-to-back with Before Sunrise. The other two are Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Spring Summer Fall Winter...and Spring.
Coffee and Cigarettes, The Twilight Samurai, Strayed, Intimate Strangers, and Silver City are still must-see DVDs before I put my list out officially. I think I'll wait for Million Dollar Baby to come here in theatres, as well. Waiting for Mean Creek, The Story of the Weeping Camel, and Metallica: Some Kind of Monster to hit DVD before composing it is not something I really want to do, but I think I may.

Matt, I love every movie on your list--6 made mine, too--and even though my list never mentioned Dogville, it nearly cracked my Honorable Mention. (It probably faded off only because for me, it lives in the shadow of Five Obstructions.) I even really like your "notables," although I enjoyed Super Size Me much more than I respected it.

You have a boss? I always thought you were the stick-it-to-the-man type, holed up in your ramshackle shed smoking pipes--or whatnot--while churning out beautiful prose. 
I have a friend who has refused to watch Toy Story since 1995, only because too many people told him to see it. I really don't know what point he's trying to prove, but he's proud of his nine-year hold-out.
