CD Player & iTunes: Uncle Tupelo, 89/93: An Anthology
I just got 89/93: An Anthology and I've been playing it over and over for the past few days. I love, love, love "Gun," which is now one of my favorite Jeff Tweedy songs, right up there with my favorite Wilco tracks. I still need to buy Uncle Tupelo's first three albums (I already have Anodyne), and 89/93 is urging me to hurry up and do just that. Great stuff. _________________ Michael Scrutchin

"Gun" is probably my favorite UT tune on my favorite UT album, Still Feel Gone. Since I have all of the band's albums, I never bothered to pick up An Anthology--but I probably should, since it has a few extra goodies.
Did you hear the rumor that Uncle Tupelo is listed among the "potential" bands for this year's Lollapalooza? I'm quite certain a Jay-Jeff reunion on stage is about as likely as me growing a fourth testicle overnight, but in both cases, it would be both fascinating and awesome if it happened.
Speaking of Jay Farrar, did you ever pick up Son Volt's Okemah and the Melody of Riot? _________________ "When I was in Barcelona they showed pornography on regular television. I'm assuming it's the same way in Mexico since they also speak Spanish." - IMDb user comment |

I heard it once or twice and liked it. I'll probably buy it sometime soon.
An Uncle Tupelo reunion would be awesome, but based on what I've heard about the bad blood between Jay and Jeff, I doubt it'll happen (Tweedy doesn't get along very well with guys named Jay, does he?). _________________ Michael Scrutchin

I think "bad blood" may or may not exist; at the very least, it's probably deeply overplayed by the media and the fans. (Last year Farrar even gave an interview in which he implied that those long-ago events were the result of two young, immature kids behaving like young, immature kids, and refused to rule out a reconciliation.) At this point, both men's lives and careers are so far removed from UT that they probably no longer harbor the same resentments that hardcore UT fans do. I think a greater challenge to a UT reunion is the fact that neither artist really needs to become a nostalgia act... their careers are doing just fine without living in their UT past.
That said, I'd roller skate ten thousand miles to see a one-off UT reunion. _________________ "When I was in Barcelona they showed pornography on regular television. I'm assuming it's the same way in Mexico since they also speak Spanish." - IMDb user comment |

Streetlight Manifesto - Keasbey Nights
1. Only Streetlight would re-make an entire album, just to make the band that originally recorded it angry.
2. Only Streetlight could do this, and make the album amazingly better sonically in the process.
Best quote from the mock interview at the end of the CD:
"As my good friend always says, you are indeed a casette, and unfortunately, you just don't get it." _________________ everybody knows that you only live a day/ but its brilliant anyway |

Almost forgot about Glenn Kotche's Mobile, which arrived yesterday. I heard Kotche play in concert last fall, and knew I'd purchase this percussion experiment as soon as it was released. It certainly lives up to expectations, although I suspect its target audience is quite limited. _________________ "When I was in Barcelona they showed pornography on regular television. I like all of those, especially Neko. I've only skimmed the Loose Fur CD, but the last track, "Wanted," is really good. _________________ Michael Scrutchin

I haven't been able to stop listening to Fox Confessor Brings the Flood; the songs become richer upon each new listen. Stacy and I are catching Neko live tomorrow night. Can't wait. _________________ "When I was in Barcelona they showed pornography on regular television. I'm assuming it's the same way in Mexico since they also speak Spanish." - IMDb user comment |

Flaming Lips - At War With the Mystics
I've always been a little ambivalent about the Lips, and this album probably isn't going to change that--but I can't stop listening to the opening track, the supercatchy "Yeah Yeah Yeah Song."
Already preordered: Raconteurs, Pearl Jam, and Neil Young's Living With War. I've been digging everything I've heard about and from all three. This is actually the first PJ record I've ever purchased, which is strange considering my age and my musical tastes. _________________ "When I was in Barcelona they showed pornography on regular television. Supercatchy indeed. The rest of the album I'm still unsure about. Aside from frequently going back to "Yeah Yeah Yeah Song," I haven't listened to the album in full since the first time I heard it. I was always a bit underwhelmed by Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, too, although I love a few tracks on it, especially "Do You Realize??" The Soft Bulletin, though, a damn good album all around. I still haven't ventured any further back into the Lips' catalogue.
I like the Raconteurs album; I'll be buying it. _________________ Michael Scrutchin

Same here, although "Free Radicals" is starting to grow on me. _________________ "When I was in Barcelona they showed pornography on regular television. I'm assuming it's the same way in Mexico since they also speak Spanish." - IMDb user comment |
