Michael, I remember you saying a while back that you were a fan of Son Volt. Have you heard the new album yet? I'd love to hear your take on it.

I didn't know about their past experience, I just listened to the band a month or so ago; interesting.

You've never listened to Far (Gratitude vocalist Jonah Matranga's first band)? If not, get thee a copy of Far's 1998 album Water & Solutions. It's great. While Far initially had a lot in common with the alt-metal stylings of the Deftones, Water & Solutions was an important precursor to the nu-emo explosion that was still a few years off. Ultimately, though, Far didn't really catch on at the time -- as guitarist Shuan Lopez has said, they were too melodic for the hardcore kids and not heavy enough for the metal kids. And yet not exactly radio-friendly, either, at least at the time. They'd probably be more successful now than in the late '90s. Which, I guess, was one of the reasons that Immortal Records decided to reissue Water & Solutions late last year, complete with a bonus DVD of Far performing. I just bought it, which makes it the third time I've purchased that CD. It's one of my all-time favorites.

I'm only somewhat familiar with Son Volt -- I have Trace, which I like but really haven't listened to much since I bought it. I haven't checked out any of their other stuff yet, and aside from Anodyne I haven't even really dipped into Uncle Tupelo's catalogue. That said, I am eager to check out Son Volt's new one; I hear it's more rock, less country, which sounds good to me. Do you like it?

Yes, Okemah and the Melody of Riot is more rock, less country than Son Volt's previous albums. It sounds very good indeed--I think it's one of the catchiest, crunchiest guitar albums of the year. (I think I like it more than even Trace.) Son Volt is coming to Milwaukee in October, and I wouldn't miss it for the world.

I'm not computer-savvy enough to do this whole "picture" thing, but I'm listening to "Fear Of Music" by Talking Heads - one of my favorite bands, and my favorite album by them.

I don't keep up on new music enough to be qualified to say what the year's "best" are, but here are my ten personal favorites so far:
1. Eels Blinking Lights and Other Revelations
2. Sufjan Stevens Illinois
3. White Stripes Get Behind Me Satan
4. Ryan Adams and the Cardinals Cold Roses
5. Spoon Gimme Fiction
6. Son Volt Okemah and the Melody of Riot
7. Riviera At the End of the American Century
8. The Decemberists Picaresque
9. Oasis Don?t Believe the Truth
10. Sleater-Kinney The Woods
I know it's not cool to like Oasis anymore, but their new album is suprisingly catchy and I listen to it often. I also really like the Springsteen and Beck discs, along with the collections released by Fountains of Wayne and especially Belle & Sebastian (if it was new material, the latter would definitely place in the top ten). And I admire the System of a Down album far more than I actually enjoy it.
I'm still looking forward to picking up Clap Your Hands Say Yeah; Andrew Bird; Go-Betweens; Jack Johnson; Kraftwerk; and Stars. And when they are finally released: New Pornographers; LCD Soundsystem; Supergrass; Dandy Warhols; John Cale; Elbow; and two more Ryan Adams albums. I should also give Common a try; anybody want to burn me a copy?
Guiltiest Pleasure: Kaiser Chiefs Employment
Biggest disappointments: Garbage, Alkaline Trio, Coldplay, and both Bright Eyes discs.

- Spoon, Gimme Fiction
- Eels, Blinking Lights and Other Revelations
- Maria Taylor, 11:11
- The White Stripes, Get Behind Me Satan
- Aimee Mann, The Forgotten Arm
- Kathleen Edwards, Back to Me
- Josh Rouse, Nashville
- The New Pornographers, Twin Cinema
Those are the ones that have stuck the most so far, but I dig a lot of other stuff, including the new albums by Springsteen, Beck, Son Volt, Ryan Adams, System of a Down, The Lucksmiths, M.I.A., and Stephen Malkmus.
