I can see why some people are comparing CYHSY to Talking Heads and Arcade Fire. I'll probably buy their album eventually. Anybody else hear these guys?

Currently listening to Michael Penn's Mr. Hollywood Jr., 1947, which hits stores in August. But you can stream the entire album (QuickTime required) right here courtesy of spinART Records. I'm only a few tracks in, but so far it sounds much in line with Penn's last couple of albums -- which certainly isn't a bad thing. I'm digging it.

Fountains of Wayne / Out-of-State Plates

Double disc collection of b-sides and unreleased material. Love the cover of Ricky Nelson's "Today's Teardrops." Between that and "Hung Up On You" (from Welcome Interstate Managers), I'm convinced Cris Collingwood harbors fantasies of becoming a honky-tonk superstar.

Funeral For A Friend Hours

The last CD from the band was an amazing album. It proved them to be a large step ahead of all the other bands in the emo/hardcore genre that I adore. However this CD takes a wonderful step back into a place I like to call the land of bland music. It echos every other band of the time and doesn't even pull it off in a way that makes it fun or entertaining. Sad.

The Early November, eh? I like a good pop-punk-emo album from time to time...

In keeping with the month theme, this morning I finally got around to picking up Picaresque by The Decemberists. (Michael and Matt Header, you two should definitely check this band out. My guess is their literate lyrics and ambitious arrangements would be right up your alleys.)

Amber Pacific The Possibility and the Promise

I was told to listen to this band by my bass player who is obsessed with them. I find them very refreshing because it reverts back to the power-pop rock style that I used to listen to in greater quantity a year or two ago. Although they might be a little behind most bands today, it actually puts them ahead of others because they are now different from what is bigger. Either way, I enjoy

CD Player: The Decemberists' The Tain, and 18-minute epic retelling of an Celtic legend, in the form of rock opera. These people are artistically ambitious in the weirdest ways.

Gratitude, s/t. Jonah Matranga (Far, Onelinedrawing, etc.) fronts Gratitude -- his first major-label outing since Far. It's a lot more radio-friendly and polished than anything Matranga's ever done, which isn't a bad thing. Songs like the hooky, single-ready "Drive Away" bring to mind the power-pop side of Jimmy Eat World, while slighty edgier, punkier tracks like "This Is the Part" make it clear that Gratitude wouldn't be entirely out of place with all the nu-emo/pop-punk bands on The Warped Tour. That said, it's rumored that Matranga had hoped Gratitude would get away from the "emo" tag that had become associated with his solo project Onelinedrawing. I think it will. For the most part, their self-titled debut is just a good pop-rock record (a nice mix high-energy rockers and softer-but-still-guitar-heavy mid-tempo tracks) -- nothing more, nothing less.
