I am a huge fan of Cake; I really enjoy "Sheep Go to Heaven" from Prolonging the Magic.

Me too. Last year a boxed set was released, and I'm looking forward to hearing the 2-disc re-issue of The Name of This Band is Talking Heads, which features live performances from 1977-1981.
I know you admire Stop Making Sense as much as I do. I especially like their version of "Take Me to the River," which is performed in the film. I'm actually just a David Byrne fan in general, from "Loco de Amor" to "Yolanda Niguas." (I'm not crazy about True Stories, though.)

I respectfully disagree, although I do like "Sunshine and Ecstasy" quite a bit. (I could live with never again hearing "Genius of Love.")

I used to play this all the time in class. Is that still in my rotation? (I'm old enough to have a certain nostalgic--read: embarrassed--fondness for the A-Ha version.)

I remeber hearing you play it a couple times and the first time i heard that or "Sell Out" on your computer I think I almost died from shock.

Yeah, Stop Making Sense is brilliant - that's one of my favorite movies. "Take Me to the River" and "Slippery People" are showtoppers, I think.
I remember being a bit disappointed by True Stories, which I haven't seen in a bit, but the fashion show was hilarious. I remember rewinding that part and rewatching it three times.
Have you heard Grown Backwards at all? It's not his best, but wow, there are some cool songs on there. _________________ "I don't like talking to people I know, but strangers I have no problem with." -- Larry David, "Curb Your Enthusiasm" |

CD Player: A.M., Wilco
Playlist: Everything Wilco
I finally picked up A.M., Wilco's debut album, and I'm really digging it. At first I thought it was pleasant but boring -- at least compared to Wilco's subsequent releases -- but I like it more with each listen. "Passenger Side" is my favorite song so far. Now I'm trying to compile a Wilco mix CD for a friend who's unfamiliar with them. So many great songs... _________________ Michael Scrutchin

"Passenger Side" is my favorite from A.M., too, followed by "Box Full of Letters." I agree that it's their weakest, least adventurous album, but I still enjoy it. Of course, only two band members are left from those days.
I don't know if I could narrow my favorite Wilco tracks down to 20 or so, but I'd definitely start with "Misunderstood," "I Got You," "Sunken Treasure," and "Outta Mind (Outta Sight)" from Being There; "Shot in the Arm," "I'm Always in Love," "How to Fight Loneliness" and "Via Chicago" from Summerteeth; "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart," "Kamera," "Jesus, etc.," "I'm the Man Who Loves You," and "Poor Places" from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot; and "At Least That's What You Said," "Spiders," "Muzzle of Bees," and "Handshake Drugs" from A Ghost Is Born. There's 17. (Actually, you should just give him all of Foxtrot, and then a second disc of additional Wilco.)
Where do you begin with the Mermaid Avenue sessions? I suppose with the singalongs "California Stars" and "Hoodoo Voodoo." I also really like "Airline to Heaven" and "Christ for President." (If that's your kind of thing, definitely check out Uncle Tupelo's March 16-20, 1992, which is not just their best album but a kindred spirit to the Mermaid Avenues.)
Not Quite Wilco, But Close Enough
I'd also find room for "Laminated Cat" and "Chinese Apple" from the Loose Fur side project; "Retrieval of You" and "Old Plantation" from the Down With Wilco collaboration with Minus 5; and "Alone" and "Cars Can't Escape" from the YHF demos. Vintage Tweedy must also include "Radio King" from his Golden Smog side project. And if you can, track down Loose Fur's live cover of T.Rex's "Organ Blues." It's an astonishment.
Of course, if I jotted down this list tomorrow, it would probably look totally different.

"Don't Panic" is a terrific track; I like the entire Parachutes album, actually. To my ears, Coldplay is one of the strongest bands currently in the Top 40 realm.
