Oh...ha...right...yeah. Having the wrong country probably softens my argument a bit.

I suppose I quibble with them not because of the movies judged solely - The Last Samurai, truth be told, isn't a bad Boy Scout picture, an agreeable if shallow entertainment - but because of the fact that they can be construed as the imperialistic superiority that seems to be pervading American policy these days. Seeing Bush rant on about not giving up and saving the Middle East and turning it into a democracy - in other words, righteous America playing superpolice and saving the "backwards" ways of this area - and then digging into the similiarities of Tom Cruise save the day, Boy Scout or not, in Japan and then (perhaps) England, is disheartening. It wasn't completely a knock against those movies, or at least against Last Samurai; it was mostly me being perturbed at the superiority complex that some (high-ranking) Americans have. |
