Speaking of Wilco, they are currently holed up in New York, recording their follow-up to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Jeff Tweedy says, "Our goal with this record is to sound like five people sitting in a room playing music. As happy as we were with YHF, I don't think there's going to be a lot of heavy treatment or tweaking on these songs. The record as a whole is pretty organic-sounding."
The effort may be a 2-discer, like Being There, or it may be released as 2 entirely separate albums. If released as a single collection, possible titles include dbpm or Wilco Happens. (I'm not crazy about either, but forced to choose, I prefer the latter.)
The album will include "Handshake Drugs," already released in one version on their More Like the Moon EP, and "Kicking Television," which has been making concert appearances on the last leg of the band's recent tour. I heard "Kicking Television" when Tweedy screeched it on PBS' Soundstage--I think I loved it.

From the WILCO Official Site:
"That next record (or should we say "cd"?) is now entitled "A ghost is born" and will, if the schedule holds, be released by Nonesuch in North America on June 8 and their affiliated labels virtually everywhere else in the world that same week. The track listing is as follows:
At least that's what you said
Hell is
Chrome
Spiders (kidsmoke)
Muzzle of Bees
Hummingbird
Handshake drugs
Company in my back
I'm a wheel
Wishful thinking
Late greats
Theologians
Less than you think"
June 8. I guess "Kickin' Television" didn't make the final cut. Bummer.
I was perusing the links at their site, and was surprised to see one set aside for the experimental film Decasia. Very cool.

Today's Wilco song I can't get out of my head: "Poor Places," from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.
NW, are you a Wilco fan?

I actually managed to download the More Like the Moon EP recently (Wilco's server kept timing out, but I logged in via FTP and got it). I really, really like it. I think "More Like the Moon" is my favorite from the EP. _________________ Michael Scrutchin

"Camera" is my favorite from the Moon EP, which is, I know, a dodgy choice since it's merely a reworking of something from YHF. Excluding that one, I'd vote for "Handshake Drugs," with "A Magazine Called Sunset" running a close second.
Michael, have you listened to the 20+ demos for YHF that are available? There are some great cuts that never made the final album, including "Alone," "Not for the Season," "Rhythm," and a more subdued version of "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart."

Well, I thought about going to see FoW and Wilco at Summerfest, but didn't get a chance to. Wilco is band i just kinda got to know of at the beginning of last summer. FoW I've liked for a long while, but actually to me, Satcy's Mom is a disappointing song for them to make it big on. Anyway, i did see Billy Idol at Summerfest and he was, as I expected, a great live act. Tsch?ss. _________________ 0110011001110101011000110110101100100000011110010110111101110101

I hadn't been to Summerfest in nearly 10 years, but I decided to endure the crowds and drunken loutishness for the double bill of Wilco and Fountains of Wayne. Two of my favorite bands back-to-back? Couldn't pass it up. I tend to agree that "Stacy's Mom" is not their most representative track, but it's not exactly an anomaly, either. While it has been ridiculously overplayed, it is indeed a well-written, well-performed pop song, and quite funny too. It reminds me of The Cars.
I remember hearing them a decade ago, and "Radiation Vibe" was a minor hit back then. Their second album, too, made quite a stir among critics. Those of us who have been listening all along know their recent nomination for Best New Artist is just one more in a proud history of Grammy absurdities.
j00 - If you're not a huge fan of "Stacy's Mom," which track from Managers would you have preferred become a hit single?

I have to say, I am not really a fanof Fountains of Wayne. "Stacys Mom" just didn't make me stop and say "Wow, this is a great song." I suppose I should listen to more of their material before I judge, but meh, just too busy I guess.
As far as Wilco, they seem like a nice change of pace from the mainstream, or even some of the indie bands I listen to. I hope to be able to hear more of them in the future.

Flogging Molly is among my favorite punk bands. Great stuff. Have you heard RX Bandits, Erickson? They rock the house indeed. |

Wilco's A Ghost Is Born is set for release June 22. But you can hear it all now--for free--at the band's official website:
