Dude! Awesome! I went Tuesday and Wednesday evening for the exact purpose of seeing City of God, but both nights the projector was busted and the screening was cancelled. (Both nights I hopped on over to the Oriental for Triplets, which I've seen four times now. Indeed, it's true, I have no life.) But I'll have to head over to Northtown, hopefully this weekend. |

[mope]I want to see The Triplets of Belleville.  [/mope] But I may have a chance to see Monster this weekend. Incidently, speaking of movies about psychotics with "monster" in the title, I just saw Party Monster last night. Has anyone else seen this yet?

Hoo-ya, I'm getting closer to composing a halfway decent Best of 2003 list, having finally seen Lost in Translation and Monster. Our local theater has had the benevolence to grace Podunk Central with Mystic River, which I'll catch on Friday. I'm a big boy now!

Just caught Mystic River today. Very impressive. This is probably Tim Robbins's most remarkable performance. Like Bill Murray's performance in Lost in Translation, I'd heard much hype about it but didn't expect the actual experience to live up. It did, and then some. Sean Penn's performance, on the other hand, was very good, but not outstanding. I suppose I was a tad underwhelmed by the film's wrap-up, as far as the typical expectations of a thriller goes, but I think the narrative was more concerned with emotion, characterization, and the human condition, in all of which it excelled, making it one of the best of the year. I hope Clint lives to be 102 and continues to make movies on his deathbed.

I've slowly been won over. It's become passe to praise Unforgiven, but I still think it's one of the most powerful essays about violence--and our media representations of it--Hollywood has ever produced. I think too many of Eastwood's efforts are a tad slack (consider the recent Absolute Power, Space Cowboys, True Crime, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil), but without fail all of them contain sequences of startling beauty and elegance. And when Eastwood is on, as he is in Mystic River, he's as good as we have. I'm also a huge fan of his stripped-down, no-fuss style. History will be very kind to him, I think.

I completely agree with your assessment, Eric. I'd say his lesser works are stumbles rather that failures (with the exception of Midnight in the Garden..., which, for me, didn't work at all at any time) and still have much to offer inspite of their imperfections.

they're the 4 that genuinely impressed me.
Belleville Triplets is the film that's most impressed my small dog Kiki; full of very interesting sounds, not only dog noises. |

Good choices, Kenji. I saw The Return more than two months ago and I still find myself thinking about it quite often.

Uzak (Distant) was one the most rewarding offerings at the 2003 Milwaukee Film Festival. (Matt, I know you liked it at least as much as I did.) It's really stuck with me; this year I suspect either Head-On or Death on Gaza will stay with me the longest.

The only great film I saw at this year's Milwaukee Film Festival was Moolade; otherwise, I only had time for one other movie, sadly enough. Where does the time go?

Moolaade was in my Top Five, also. (The list entire ought to be posted shortly.) That was my first Sembene, and I'm excited to see more.
