Indeed, you might say so. I'm on page 311 now! |

I am currently "rediscovering" M.R. James. He is truly one of the finest writers of the macabre. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

I took a break from Tolstoy's lenghty novel and read both Journey's End [Sherriff's masterful play about WW1] and Anne Frank - Diary of a Young Girl. Loved them both. |

The Davinci Code by Brown - Makes some good points and yet gets a little pulpy at times, but still fun. Lacks some of the wit and research of say Possession by Byatt. |

Good stuff, G.A. I think you'll like it.
mfritschel, I'm going to read Da Vinci Code soon, I hope. I'm interested, and one of my students loaned me her copy, so now I just need to find the time.

M.R. James is widely considered one of the finest writers of English ghost stories, and I'm inclined to agree with the assessment. His bogies aren't stately puffs of smoke, but rather nasty, malevolent buggers, not unlike, say, Sadako. His story "The Casting of the Runes" was the basis for Jacques Tourneur's Curse of the Demon. You can find some of his work on line here. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

I'm currently reading A Doll's House by Ibsen for a class I'm in, and for enjoyment reading: Heaven on Earth: The Rise and Fall of Socialism, by Joshua Muravchik, which is surprisingly entertaining and illuminating. (Did you know that basically everything that's known as Marxism was conceived and written by Frederich Engels, and that Marx, while an intelligent thinker and brilliant soapbox orator, basically lived off of the success and money of Engels his entire life?) |

At least he practiced what he preached. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."

Heh heh. I'm not actually a rabid anti-socialist, but that was just too perfect an opportunity to pass up. _________________ "If you're talking about censorship, and what things should be shown and what things shouldn't be shown, I've said that as an artist you have no social responsibility whatsoever."
