Quote: | A Los Angeles judge has tossed out a lawsuit by a group of South Carolina college students who had sought to have a scene from Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan in which they appeared deleted from the forthcoming DVD version. The students are seen drinking and making racist remarks. They claim that they were duped into appearing in the movie and were assured that it would not be shown in the U.S. On Monday, Judge Joseph Biderman ruled that the students had failed to show a reasonable probability of success on the merits of their case. |

I saw that too.
In other news: Sacha Baron Cohen tied Forrest Whitaker for Best Actor in the LA Film Critics' Awards. Now, I'm not one of Whitaker's biggest proponets this Awards Season--shoe-ins are usually pretty boring to me--but that's something else. _________________ Danny Baldwin

It also strikes me as provocation for provocation's sake, which I'm not crazy about. Cohen's work in Borat is great for a lot of reasons, but acting is not chief among them. It exists as something else.
True, shoe-ins aren't very exciting, but sometimes they are the right and deserving choice. Isn't it more important to be honest than unpredictable? _________________ "When I was in Barcelona they showed pornography on regular television. I suppose, but I'm not sure I can think of a recent shoe-in that was deserving. They tend to be the most commercially viable picks of the lot--or, in cases like that of Brokeback Mountain (which didn't win, but was thought to be a shoe-in), the most controversially uncontroversial.
That said, perhaps I'm just bitter we won't be seeing Little Children, Little Miss Sunshine, and Volver sweep this year. The Queen is my only hope, as far as the "experts" tell me. _________________ Danny Baldwin

It's really not worth getting worked up about awards one way or the other, since they have relatively little to do with rewarding actual artistic merit. It's fairly easy to step back and observe with detachment, viewing them merely as annual footnotes. (At this point I can barely muster enough interest to even look up the various winners online, let alone feel resentment about any particular choice.)
No one remembers awards, anyway. The movies that endure are the ones that critics and historians keep talking about, and I suspect that The Queen and Volver have a better shot at winning that long-term game than, say, The Devil Wears Prada.
In all seriousness, I tell you that I could not list which movies have won Best Picture over the last five years--mostly because once the night is over, it's immediately out of mind. _________________ "When I was in Barcelona they showed pornography on regular television.
